Humph was in an 18 hour delay, but I'm sure in the end he thought it was worth it. ...that's possibly true, but I suspect that if he had seen the distinct possibility in advance, he might well have done some contingency planning. He might have but he didnt.

Last time I went drinking in Reading town centre at night was about 5 years ago. I was shocked, it was like a bloody war zone full of nasty chain "pubs" & restaurants. Whereas it used to be great fun; and busy, and pretty much trouble free, with lots of interesting, individual places. Oh, and BTW, Kings Grill on Kings Road is the place for the town's best kebab. Opposite the library. Best curry house is a few doors down too, House of Flavours.

Quite the contrary, I was a regular. I even achieved my highest scores ever on Asteroids and Galaxians in the front bar. My sister worked behind the bar there and I used to work at the Tudor [almost] opposite. There was never much trouble there. Certainly not in the 70s & 80s. It enjoyed its own reputation though, but the legends are largely apocryphal. As for the Moderation, I used to play dominoes there on a Sunday lunch and at the Star at the bottom of Donkin Hill, brag at the Golden Keys in Queens Road and pool at the Red Cow in Star Road and at the Prince of Wales in Prospect Street. Regular local low life at the time, me.

...... I've been here 22 years... I thought the Boar's Head ceased to function around the millennium, so you can't have seen much more of it than I did. I "overdosed" on Southern Comfort (I know...) there on my 21st, and haven't been able to look at a bottle of the same since. In my day, it was a cattle market............. (Unlike The Lion, on Gt Knollys Street, next to the real cattle market, which did the best steak in town!)

Reading? Near Slough isn't it? Somewhere like that anyway. Went to Slough once. No need to go back.

I used to work up the Farnham Road.
Slough is a thoroughly miserable place without redeeming feature. Or at least it was in the 80s, doubt its changed. They even closed Slough Dogs. Its only source of entertainment.

I think that Slough is probably the worst English town/city I have ever been in. Even Birmingham has redeeming bits.

Hey Al, is The World Turned Upside Down on the Basingstoke road Still there? [opposite Gillettes]. Yep. It's one of those carvery type joints now. Don't pass by too often, use the new A33 mostly. Lots of bus lanes and restrictions on Basingstoke Rd now.

Your assumption is still valid. It's moderately rubbish. But having said that it's in the throes of a rennaissance due to Crossrail. In the next 10 years I can see it becoming kind of fashionable, as has Reading (compared to what it was). Highest return on rental property in the area too - relatively low purchase priuces but high rents and high demand for rentals due to Heathrow and the fast train to Paddington. I f was buyin BTL property, that's where I'd go in the South East. High employment rate, lots of jobs. It's going to be a bit of a boom town soon, and some of the centre has already been redeveloped. Walking distance to Eton and Windsor is a redeeming feature, surely? Grammar schools, too. I'd live there if I had to without too much problem. It's just the name that drags it down still. Obviously it has bad areas to be avoided, like all major towns. Brand new stadium for the football team just opened this week too. I'd probably rather live in the right parts of Slough than the right parts of, say, Bracknell.
