Used a quiet few days at work last week to do some housekeeping. One task was to get up to date with claims for the family’s various dentist and hygienist visits since I started the new job.
I checked my current account this morning and, sure enough, all four claims had been paid.
Three of them eight times.
And the fourth (and largest) eighteen times.
So I have a five-digit credit that should have been barely four. I rang the insurer, who didn’t seem surprised to hear from me, from which I can suppose mine is not the only erroneous payment. If they’re still in business next week, they’ll let me know how they’d like it returned to them. Another order of magnitude and running off to South America might have been an option.
I can only guess what kind of ‘computer error’ (i.e. coding or operator error) could cause this, but the response this morning suggested it might have affected all the payments made today. I’m supposing an otherwise healthy company could survive paying nearly a month’s worth of outgoings in one day but I’ve been around corporate finance offices enough to know that this one might have been a bit tense.

Sounds like they could use some help from someone who knows their way around a spreadsheet…🤔
Nearly 40 years ago, I changed jobs. My “old” employers kept on paying me for quite a few months after I left and even gave me a year end bonus on top!
This was pre-internet and mobile phones/banking etc so I didn’t notice until I got a quarterly paper bank statement.
I phoned them to tell them and got through to a guy with whom I hadn’t had the best of working relationships with in the bean counting department. It was disturbingly pleasant to hear him having to be really nice to me and trying very hard to get me to agree not to mention it to anyone else. In the end I wrote them a cheque for the post tax amount and sent it in for his attention. Guess I could have dropped him in it, I’m pretty sure he would have stiffed me if some error had been on my part, but I’m just not that guy.

A quick google shows the worldwide group has assets of more than $50bn, so it can probably ride out the cash flow disruption.
Always funny when you have someone like Humph’s former colleague in a corner. Something biblical about coals of fire, isn’t there?

They did email me eventually to ask for their money back. Having made a phone call to confirm the destination (just sending a five-digit amount to an account in an email seemed like a bad idea) I sent them the first £1000, which was all my bank would allow on the day I created a new payee. They can have the rest next week.
And then this afternoon I got another email — to say they’ve approved one of my original claims and will be paying it soon. So the chaos may not be over for a while yet.
