Just wondering what you'd do with old/unwanted hard disk drives. I have quite a few from old PCs and anything up to 250GB doesn't seem much point in keeping. I am not worried about data on them - they are wiped.
But if I drop them into the 'small appliances' bin at the recycling centre then they probably won't do anything to recycle the metals. I had thought of taking them apart so the aluminium is separated. But the hidden '7th' screw on the top of a few drives is hard to locate under the sticker. And what to do with the strong magnets from inside?
I can't see much of a re-use of such small drives. And 3 of them are EIDE and not even SATA.
I will probably keep the two 1TB drives and the 500GB drives for archiving VHS tapes onto.

But if I drop them into the 'small appliances' bin at the recycling centre then they probably won't do anything to recycle the metals. I think that’s exactly what they will do. When I drop things off at my South Oxfordshire centre, the first thing they do is separate any cables, to recover the copper. The rest goes for breaking and separation of plastics, gold and so on. If you’re not sure about your council, there’ll be someone there whose job is to know. In my experience they’re pleased to answer queries from conscientious users, so it would be worth an email.
