Mrs K enjoys a glass of white wine now and again. Preferably a well chilled Sancerre but a good Muscadet isn't usually refused. The trouble is that a decent Sancerre is around £20 a bottle even at supermarket prices. Imagine my surprise when we were on holiday in Cuba and the Chilean Sauvignon Blanc that the wine waiter had recommended as an alternative to the Sancerre they didn't have, was greeted with "Mmm, that's quite nice. Light but with a slight fizz on the tongue. Perfect for summer."
Imagine my further surprise (and delight) when I googled it when we got back and found that it's available in the UK for about a fiver a bottle incl. delivery. Probably a fiver a gallon in Chile but hey, it's cheaper than Sancerre and she's happy.
It's called Frontera and is produced by Concha y Torro who are apparently a well established producer in Chile.
Recommended if you like a light dry white, best quaffed fairly well chilled.

Now, young Kevin, I am very much living at the source. In fact, if I didn't conduct such thorough surveys there would be a great deal more available for export; Friend of mine runs Veramonte - that really is my favourite mainstream wine. I have no clue what the prices are in the UK, but they're damned reasonable here. I like both the wine and the way the business is run. veramonte.com/welcomeConcha y Torro is very consistent and predictable. As a complete non-expert I particularly enjoy the predictability of their wines - taste and quality. Perhaps it doesn't reach the dizzy heights, but I've never had a bad one either. www.conchaytoro.com/?lang=en_usIts just down the road from me, and I wander in there to meet a guy I know sometimes. Its quite commercial, and often aimed at gringos, but its quite nice. I also like Indomita, from the Casablanca valley as is Veramonte. Indomita just seems to go from strength to strength. Worth checking out if it is available in the UK. www.indomita.cl/enAnother good one to get from the Superrmarket if you can is anything from Viña Cousiño Macul www.cousinomacul.com/en/bodegas/macul/There are also many new and up and coming yards in new and up and coming regions/areas. Do I remember you saying that you spoke Spanish? Because another friend of mine produces a kind of industry monthly newsletter - bargains and wines to watch, and all that sort of thing, as well as studies of the individual areas and the personalities and businesses within them.. I'll sign you up for it if you wish, I can probably beat him up for a free subscription, but I'm pretty sure that there is no English version. If you are interested, get an email address to me one way or another.

If she doesn't they'll be used for cooking.

Well, here's hoping. All I know is that I like them and that our tastes sound similar.
I shall await the verdict nervously.

By the way Kevin, did you ever try those wines? Or do I take the silence as a sign of your opinion?

By the way Kevin, did you ever try those wines? Or do I take the silence as a sign of your opinion? Sorry. Yes. I ordered half a dozen bottles of each and they are both good. I actually prefer the Veramonte but Mrs K, who drinks most of the white stuff, doesn't think that it's worth the extra £3 over the cost of her Frontera. Since it's me who pays for it I'm not complaining. Edit: I must add that she prefers her white wine quite cold. Straight out of the fridge at 3C into a glass that's been in the freezer.

That's a bit chilly. Takes most of the flavour away.

That's a bit chilly. Takes most of the flavour away. Exactly. If you want to visit Basingstoke and discuss that with her you're welcome. I should warn you that you won't change her mind and it won't be a long discussion. Having said that, it takes her about an hour to drink one glass so it's probably at room temp before she finishes it.
