This morning’s lead news item. Apparently everything isn’t just fine and the UK doesn’t hold all the cards. Imagine our surprise! May need to google if you’re not a subscriber. Financial Times www.ft.com › content Stellantis warns of factory closure if Brexit deal is not renegotiated 8 hours ago — Carmaker Stellantis has warned it may be forced to close its Ellesmere Port factory…

It’ll still be someone else’s fault of course.

The Italians just don't like Scousers....
But seriously, despite not liking the EU, this is exactly why I vote Remain. It's the economy, stupid.

Stellantis probably have overcapacity and need to kill a factory somewhere. The UK is bound to be the easiest target, ‘twas ever thus. The French look after their own, and no doubt the unions are stronger in other EU nations too.

I agree.... VX factory say in the Wirral to be closed and we blame the UK. But that's the official excuse. The fact the output is based on a platform with cars made elsewhere means they can make them in the EU.
But JLR and others.....? Are they even JLR now they have ditched LR as a brand/marque?
And BMW have been building MINIs elsehwhere for a while that are electric.... I wonder what happens to BMW/MINI Oxford soon?

I always think of Stellantis as Dutch having their HQ near Amsterdam.
The rules about content were known about in 2021. Nothing has changed. Blaming Europe rings a bit hollow. Will it still be Europe's fault in 2027 when the next level of separation kicks in ?

I agree nothing has changed including the desire to blame others. Well we can vote the Brexit campaign I guess.

They can squabble as much as they like… whilst consumers quietly start to buy Chinese EVs in droves anyway…
Deckchairs and Titanic methinks.

Seemingly everything we buy now is from China more than ever and stuff you would not have thought of. We have just kitted out a holiday home and the oven and dishwasher are Chinese made. Didn't see the need to buy Bosch for something used about 1/10 of the time these things are used at home. Cars will be the next thing. Remember what Japanese cars were like in the 1970s and Koreans in the 1990s? Chinese in the 2020s....

The Chinese manufacturers are light years ahead of where the Japanese were in the 60s and Koreans in the 80s. They have already recruited Western designers and have a couple of decades working in their home market with global manufacturers. The Japanese and Koreans didn't have that.
And yet a strawpoll of cars on here still shows a heavily biased German preference with Al ploughing his lone furrow keeping the UK factory lights on for now. Most have, or recently had, something German on their driveways.

True but apart from Humph the dinosaur, the rest of us are either in or will soon be in EVs and the best EVs are not from Deutschland.
Just had a look at a Hyundai Kona EV owned by a contact. Smart looking car with good range. Only let down by slowish charging speed. That will change soon. Perfect for suburban driving.

Issue I've got with a certain South Korean manufacturer is the dealer network cannot fix onboard software issues and the manufacturer is taking the slopey shouldered, we're only the importer approach.
Combined with difficulty getting replacement parts outside the dealership network doesn't make for a possible great long term ownership experience. Your experience outside the EU may vary.

Yes I think the Kona 64kwh is probably the best value second hand EV on the market. A great all-rounder. Personally wish it was a bit lower to the ground, but there you go. Hey ho.
