Nothing’s cheap any more. I’d read elsewhere that some of those salary sacrifice deals weren’t competitive, with the provider not the employees getting a good deal. My upcoming replacement Forester is weighing in at around GBP25k which seems good value, but of course we’re comparing apples with bananas. Used EVs seem 'cheap' in the UK now. You can pick up a 62kwh Leaf, or a 64kwh Hyundai Kona, for under £15k now.

Always liked the idea of one and farmers have used and abused them for decades. The Outback would fit my needs, it's not an SUV though it's jacked up estate would tick the access box for Mrs BPG who sometimes struggles with the low ride height of the Focus. Plenty of space but the emissions are not very attractive, 169g/km for only 169PS. Focus is rated at 175 for 280PS standard. Priced between 40k and 44k€ it's around 10-14k less than a new Focus ST estate. Five year guarantee is no better or worse than I have on my Ford.

Used EVs seem 'cheap' in the UK now. You can pick up a 62kwh Leaf, or a 64kwh Hyundai Kona, for under £15k now. They are, even in absolute terms, never mind inflation-adjusted. As my business use pattern emerges (generally not that much, and a strong focus on trains for longer trips, but a 30-miles-each-way commute when I feel like some office coffee) I think an iPace will fit — without its relatively poor efficiency and range-acquisition numbers being too great an obstacle. It’s such a nice piece of design, and so good to drive, that it feels like a shame not to have one for a couple of years, even if I then move on to something more modern in infrastructure. (I still don’t think there’s a better-looking EV anywhere.) If I don’t pay too much (and I do realise the cash amount still seems like a lot) then the overall cost should be manageable. An Approved one would come with two years of warranty and should have minimal non-routine costs. Insurance seems to be about the same as the CLS. This one, for example. I like blue — although it is a big car to be that blue. (A near-neighbour has one in dreary navy blue, which removes most of the dynamism from the shape and detailing. The roofline-echoing panel on the lower doors is critical, so it has to have enough contrast.) And the leather-free interior is nicely forward-looking. (Read about the deforestation caused in South America to provide leather for car interiors.) Not sure I’d choose the 22in wheels — either on aesthetic or efficiency grounds — but that shouldn’t be a dealbreaker, nor should it wear out a lot of tyres in my time with it. But iPaces on 19s and 20s ride so well that it would be a pity if this one didn’t. It is in Scotland, though, which makes popping in for a quick try-out awkward. Might need to pester a more local dealer who has another car with 22s. used.jaguar.co.uk/approved-used/jaguar-i-pace-hse-black-edition-24239ced7d7cdb87cc62c676dac1e28e8d1a5952?___SID=U

Looks lovely. Lot of money for something you say you’re not going to get a lot of use from though? Of course that might just be my Caledonian genes surfacing! 😉

It’ll get enough use — just not megamiles as a businessperson’s car once might have expected. I’m estimating 8,000-10,000 a year.
The CLS has to go before long, probably within a year; comfortable and capable as it is, I’m no longer comfortable with it as part of my, ahem, personal brand, so it’s time for someone else to worry about that.

Fair enough. It is very blue.

Looks very nice. Some of the EVs are weird looking or odd. The only ones that look good to me are the I5, EV6, iPace and the Taycan as they seem to make a virtue of their EV battery architecture.

That Taycan estate thing is flipping gorgeous. There was one parked at the hotel where I swim the other night. In theory I could have one, but I’m not sure I could justify it. I’d certainly have to play down the costs on the domestic front if you get my drift… 😬
(I just know it’d cost me a kitchen or an extension as well at the very best)

In other areas of life, one major expenditure might be ‘balanced’ by economies elsewhere. Domestically, however, ‘balance’ seems to be achieved by doubling down. Curious.

Certainly that theory applies to bicycles in my experience. 🤔

Salary sacrifice in another form, I suppose.

Are you aware the iPace will go out of production H1/25 and will not be replaced like for like ?
There will be completely new branding for the new EV platform.
Edit: nothing wrong with going for what you like, maybe factor that into your negotiations and probable hit on residuals.

Mine has been sacrificed so often over the years that I’m supremely confident of being in favour with the gods!

Of course, I’ll use any lever that comes to hand to adjust the price but if the car does what I want, I’ll be happy to have one.

I'm surprised at the either or legroom in the photos, plenty of legroom in the rear if Douglas Bader is piloting up front. Not an issue for you if the boys are up and away to the next phase of their lives.
Obviously, not an issue for a cash buyer but those finance numbers are designed to keep the proles out, 29% of the cash price on "Interest charges and fees" looks a bit steep. 10.9% APR, wowser ! I've obviously been out of the UK longer than I thought.
I like that blue.
