Can you imagine your LLWS being presented with one of those to service? Oh dear God, no. However, that should drag the secondhand price down even further. The manufacturers need there to be a secondhand market in order to maintain both the initial market and its prices. I think it'll be like buying an older Mercedes for example; risky though it can be, the depreciation makes it worthwhile.

Y'see, on the contrary, I want an Alfa. I know they're rubbish, I don't have a need for one and I know I'd be forever having to get it fixed. But ever since I had a week with a hired 3.0 V6 75 in Italy half a lifetime ago, I've had this Alfa itch.
I need to find a way of doing it.
I think the cure might be in the form of a GT or even a Brera.
Electric cars?
Bleh !

Yes, I can see why. But a Brera Spyder, y'know, it's just, well, picturesque isn't it?

Please yourself. What happened to 'discussion'? This is discussion, this is a viewpoint, an opinion on a likely outcome. Discussion is not "Yes Mr WDB, you are right Mr WDB, say something else so we can all agree with you Mr WDB" Lets try another tack, as this is about "man maths" Over 36 months, 36k miles ( a not untypical ownership/lease profile you will agree) could you achieve that in a Tesla without access to another car at any point. If you cant, you have to agree that has to be factored into the TCO. Are there any real life unbiased factual UK ownership experiences out there? Ones over a sufficient period of time to be meaningful? Ref the bold bit, in the context of a family or couple who will always have 2 vehicles, why do you have to factor the TCO of both in to the TCO of one? I expect WDB and Mrs WDB could quite easily have a Tesla and a petrol/diesel powered Hyundai Pony, why would they need to factor the Hyundai's TCO in to the Tesla's when they're going to own both anyway?
We could run an electric car as a daily a keep one other as the second/long distance car. It's pretty much what we do already, diesel E Class for economical daily use, thirsty Mazda as second car. the TCO of the one does not impinge upon the TCO of the other as both are needed, the second one isn't an adjunct/back up to the first. Same for WDBs I guesss.

All that is true, Vić, but I'm mostly convinced that a Tesla could be viable as an only car. There'd be some new disciplines to learn, of course, but they'd be different from those required for a petrol car, rather than significantly more onerous. And that's with the batteries and the charging network as they are today, ignoring the probable improvements in the lifetime of a new Model S.
It's not for flat dwellers or street parkers, of course, but I'm neither of those. And it's not for those who spend absurd amounts of time at the wheel - at least until the car really can drive itself and Humph can curl up in the back. But anyone who can charge at home or at work can begin or end each day with the equivalent of a full tank, without the temptation to buy jelly babies. And while I might not today be easily able to stay absolutely anywhere in rural France or Scotland, I don't think it would be hard to find accommodation with some sort of charging capability, and getting there and back would be a matter of planning a couple of half-hour stops into a multi-hour journey. And even this would be on a handful of days a year.
For the time being, the economics of the Model S don't stack up for me, but that's mostly because it's competing with the Audi A7 and BMW 645, which are beyond my budget too. But unlike them, it's not hopelessly out of reach; I can see a way it could become possible, and I certainly wouldn't reject one just because I wouldn't get to go to petrol stations any more.

There are certainly increasing numbers of them round here, so they must be working for some people. I get the impression that I see at least one every day now. I even saw one the other day with a roof rack and 4 bikes on it. I had to do a bit of a double take, but yes, it was a Tesla. Wasn't you on the test drive was it?

No, no bikes involved that day. Glass roof models get plug-in points for roof bars, apparently.
