Dodgy motor

An unusual car appeared in our street this week. It's an unremarkable mid-00s BMW 3 saloon, silver and reasonably tidily and legally parked. Extra-tidily, in fact, because the whole front end is somewhat narrower than typical for that model; it appears to have hit a tree, hard and sideways, somewhere between the front wheel and the driver's door. The headlight, mirror and window glass on that side are all gone and the front corner of the roof has been pushed upward by the impact. The Neighbourhood Watch - or so I gather from MrsB1, who monitors such things - is much exercised about it.
A few further curiosities. The tree it hit isn't round here; there are big trees but none close enough to the road, to cause that kind of damage. Which makes me wonder how the car got here in a state of, at best, borderline drivability. And there was a placard on the dashboard on its first morning here, proclaiming that it hadn't been abandoned and offering a phone number. That has since been updated to say that the car will be removed next week, which seems rather a long time to wait to deal with something that is clearly never going to be usable again, and will by then be full of rainwater and who knows what else. And anyway, who keeps blank placards and marker pens in a car for such an eventuality?
Assuming the car is taxed and insured - and passed its last MoT, not knowing at the time that it would be its last - then I don't think there's anything illegal happening here. I'm a little concerned that the coming weekend might see someone do something malicious to cause it further damage, but that's probably the worst that could happen and it's several houses along from mine. It's not pretty, though, and it'll be better when it's gone.
