…Hyundai?
I had an email last week, inviting me to view a video — which I haven’t. But I didn’t have to, because it’s on the telly too, during the cricket from Pakistan. And the essence of it is that Hyundai now feels ready to take over the world, and so we should learn how to pronounce it.
Americans rhyme it with ‘sundae’; most Brits are closer to ‘high-’n’-dry’. I’ve stuck with a two-syllable pronunciation I heard from the BBC’s Seoul correspondent about 25 years ago, which was something like ‘h(y)un-dye’. And it seems he wasn’t far off, and certainly right to sound the Y as a consonant rather than a vowel. The ad itself seems unsure whether the final diphthong is ‘ee’ or ‘ay’ or ‘eye’, but I think it’s the first syllable that they really want us to get right.
So there we have it. Can Hyundai achieve what Volkswagen never quite managed?

I can’t imagine a set of circumstances where I’d need to know. 😉

Braun is not 'brawn' but 'brown'. Do they care? No.
Skoda Octavia is supposedly the Shkoda Octarvia. Who cares? Not VAG whilst the world's taxi drivers beat a path to their dealers.
No one says FolksFargen apart from the Deutsch themselves.
Why are Hi! Un Die bothering? They won't sell more cars.

And let’s not get started on the correct pronunciation of Renault, Citroen or Peugeot…. Or Audi!

Sounds like the UK Marketing team got to the end of the year and realised they hadn't blown enough on advertising.
In the current running UK advert it's Hyun-day while the US is still running Hun-day like Sunday adverts.
After a month or two it'll be the car or the red/big/small/estate car just like every other car, nobody will really care.
Marketing, Argh ! (That's AHRRR! not Arg !)

Thing is, it also depends on your natural speech patterns, an Octavia might well be correctly pronounced Octarvia by a Mancunian but a Scot would have to say Octahvia to get the same effect.
A lot of English accents habitually leave out or swallow certain sounds or letters that would be left in place in other languages or indeed in English as spoken in other regions.
Think of dropped Hs, swallowed Rs, tortured monotone vowels etc.
Tough to say what is actually correct in truth, all entirely subjective.
I’m of the opinion that provided the speaker is communicating effectively in their own accent it’s up to the listener to cope with and interpret that.
Some accents or dialects are of course easier on the ear than others.

And let’s not get started on the correct pronunciation of Renault, Citroen or Peugeot…. Or Audi! Ren Oh! (with a nice rolling R from the back of the throat) Cit Ro En Perr Joh (the J is soft and there is no equivalent in spoken English Ow! Dee It's not that hard but then these companies have always been known by these names and pronuncitations. If it is Hyun Day then why did they not originally transliterate the Korean as H'yunday or Hunday?

Where is the “R” sound in Peugeot? Peh-Joe maybe? Not bad actually. Yes a better tranliteration than Perr.. Its a mix between Peh and Puh isn't it?

Off on another tangent ( who me? ) it always seemed ironically appropriate back when Boris was referred to on tv as the Meh of London.

KG Mobility? Do they do scooters?
I hope it's not quite that but their name is not great and since their first car the offering has been poor. But I did know someone with the original Musso and even had a lift in it once.

Apparently they’ve now launched a new thing. This from my inbox today: Bigger, bolder, more dynamic. Meet the all-new KONA. This urban-centric SUV with its unmistakable styling conveys a bold and dynamic appearance. The Seamless Horizon Lamp and parametric surfaces give the all-new KONA unique road presence. So if your surfaces aren’t parametric and your horizon still has a seam, you know you’re behind the times.
