Yeah, I was in a hurry and might have expressed myself better.
In Al’s use-case scenario he wants a(nother) car to do occasional long trips. Cruising on the open road uses less fuel than in the city, and therefore less pollution. So is a 15-year old TDi that much more nefarious than a newly-minted EV used daily in the suburban environment?
Of course the ultimate solution is to not make the journey at all, by car or any other means of transport 🙁. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

Cruising on the open road uses less fuel than in the city, and therefore less pollution. I understand why you've written that, a warmed up engine, traveling at a constant speed will burn less fuel to maintain momentum BUT the CO 2 emissions are an average of 223g/km, the further you go the more you put out. 5,000 miles/year ca.8,000kms = 1.784 metric tonnes of CO 2 for that one low miler. Now consider if Humph didn't have the option of diesel, and did 50,000 miles in my petrol car at 182g/km that would be over 14.5 tonnes/year from one car.

Just to muddy the waters, electricity is not like petrol or diesel where you buy RON95 or whatever, anywhere in Western Europe and it meets a minimum standard.
Electricity does not have a standard carbon intensity. The gCO:eq/kWh varies by country. The UK is 336, Germany 461, Norway (dirtiest region) 31, Poland 684 and France 112. Just a sample across Europe. My wife's car is currently averaging 7.52km/kWh giving it an equivalent CO2 of between 4 and 91 per kilometre depending on which plug it filled up from based on the sample markets above. That number is at the point of use and does not include transmission and heat losses along the way from power station to the battery in the car.
Much better than the petrol examples above but not 0.
You then get into where to produce and how to regulate, which we're not very good at - look at the state of the market today, which is a whole other discussion.
Edit: New Zealand is 67, the emissions there for my wife's car is 8.9g/km so there you go Norm, get yourself a 64kWh KIA eSoul. I've done the maths for you. Much better than a Mitsubishi Outlander at 226g/km or whatever.

Done some more digging, did you know* ? Solar has a carbon intensity of 45gCO:eq/kWh Wind 11gCO:eq/kWh Nuclear 12gCO... Hydro 24 Hydro storage 53 Biomass 230 Gas 490 Coal 820
Correction: Surprised me nuclear being a quarter of solar.
* UK generation figures, this varies by country e.g. hydro storage in Germany is quoted at 297

Surprised me nuclear being a quarter of solar. Me too. I’ve dropped my plan to put PV cells on the roof and ordered a crate of U 235 instead.* I wonder if it’s because the emissions relating to installation and construction can be amortised over a much longer period with nuclear. *This statement may not be factually correct.

I think I’ll always have an estate. I might even always have the one I’ve already got. Even if I get a something else as well. Just does everything I want a car to do, really really well.

Really, Humph ? You really shouldn’t have kept this to yourself for so long. 😛

Shouldn’t you be peering at a screen and filling in spreadsheets or something interesting like that at this time of day? 😎

Clearly Volvo gauged the market wrong and their sales figures went down with buyers turning to other marques. Well done to them for doing a u-turn.
I wonder if they will then realise they need estate EVs.
