First time in my life I've been told to get out my house with some urgency.
A gardener discovered a five hundred weight WWII bomb in a local garden, quite a common occurrence in Cologne, not something I've experienced out here in the sticks though this area was heavily fought over between the German army and American army in late 1944. Our house was within the 500m exclusion zone, everyone out.
The local festival hall was the designated assembly point, most locals went to stay with family. Local website setup with frequent updates, some locals tried to sneak back in down dirt tracks which hindered the professionals and were called out for it. There are idiots wherever you go.
Bomb detonated at 9:55 - looked quite impressive from 1.5kms away, allowed back in the area 23:30 with warnings there may be some damage come morning that was not picked up in the failing light.
It passed an evening, first day of the school summer holidays, I wonder what other excitement we have in the coming six weeks.

Crikey, that sounds like the kind of excitement most of us could happily do without. Well done for avoiding the standard journalese ‘unexploded bomb’ — as if there was any other kind. 🤓

Yikes. I used to get regular things like this when I was small, with my primary school and home being over the wall from a barracks, which received a few IRA bomb threats. Glad to hear school holidays are under way, hopefully the German motorways won't be too busy by the time I get on them in a couple of weeks

Last year a new startup layed fibre optic cabling. We now have FTTH in the area, the main backbone being installed under the footpaths running between the houses.
I woke up this morning wondering if that was going to be broken after the thump of detonation. It's fine, the disposal teams have had lots of practice now and appear to know how to dissipate the energy and minimise the damage.
You can't assume with the autobahn Al, Germany staggers the summer holidays across the regions. There's only one weekend, the beginning of August, where all regions are on holiday at the same time. Throw in your tomato tourists and it gets a bit busy.

Ah, thanks BPG. I shall not be on the German motorways that weekend. Perhaps I'll do a thread on my proposed routes in each direction.

An exciting evening, perhaps not one you anticipated. Glad you are all safe and no one injured.
I wonder what is the actual threat level of such ordnance given the age. Obviously a risk of some explosion but at what force and how would it be set off? But obviously better to safe than sorry if one is found.
