The labrador has taken to licking (we think one) front paw for minutes at a time. Not the pads or claws but the top part of the paw.
No obvious signs of any damage or infection etc. Doesn't do it all the time either.
Googling suggests its maybe just boredom!
Any experience of this Zero from your labs?

Nope - nowhere near the claws. It is the fur on top of the front paw and he is not chewing or nibbling , simply just big long wet licks!

Its an irritation or injury of some type. It might well be internal or external (tick, grass seed, scratch etc) Give it a good look over, grip the part with your fingers hard to see if the dog squeals, any sign of lameness?.
Dogs think licking a part that hurts or causes irritation will fix it. It wont of course. My old black lab had a rebuilt front leg after a road accident. She was always licking it, mostly because it was riddled with arthritis.
See if it goes away

We had exactly this recently with our Bolognese (Polo). Treatment included wearing a plastic cone collar to stop him licking the paw, anti-biotic tablets and a hydro-cortisone ointment to apply to the area. Being white you could see and still see a little bit a slightly raw area on the top of his paw which the vet was evidence of a tick bite or something similar (as Zero said). It was very tender and we had to hold Polo very firmly to be able to get the Vet to look at the paw.
Also keep the paw away from water for a few days. Easier said than done with Polo....
