Cheers, I'll do that. I'm usually "one of those" who just uses motorway services on long trips, I always feel the extra cost is worth it for the occasional convenience when I'm doing 8-12 hours days - I don't want to delay arrival time unnecesarily by sodding about looking for a cheaper petrol station. Once in a blue moon, who cares. But this year I might well be a bit more circumspect about it.
Of course, using an app on the go, I now have another additional cost to consider - roaming charges. More Brexit winnings.

Right now the cheapest E10 near me is 1,909, the nearby motorway services is 2,339.
Use the app to find out when places are open, petrol stations generally close between 7 and 10pm. Some are 24hr that is an exception rather than rule and Sunday is not a shopping day, but you already knew that.

The sat nav in my car among other things, knows where supermarkets are. So on a long run in any European country I just ask it for one of those on my route when a stop is required. Cheaper fuel, clean bogs and cheaper butties.
Aye…

How does it order them, by cost of Werther's originals?
Not all supermarkets have a petrol station. Where I live the shops and supermarkets are all clustered together with no obvious fuel stations close by.
And the German gotcha is fuel changes price several times/day by anything up to 10 cents/litre. Avoid filling up during commute times best before 6am or after 11:45 but before around 3:30pm when goes up again until around 7pm

The Guardian chose a photo of this stylish machine to illustrate the story. Diesel-powered, though - and the last fill in mine hit the £99 buffers at the pump weeks ago. (Actually, even I think a car that big looks a bit, erm, challenging in white.)

Germany is weird.

When I did my long distance personal challenges in the E350 (when I got 711 and 722 miles per tank respectively), I would then have to fill the tank (obvs)... Even at say £1.499 a litre, I was able to fill the tank for under £100. Now... not a chance. I do feel a little smug driving past in the Ioniq 5 but then I remember we have four petrol cars in the family. Thankfully most not driven every day but even so. Even Espadrille has asked me to leave my car facing out tonight so she can take mine and not her's to the gym early tomorrow morning. That will save £2.

Slippery slope, MINI keys will soon be yours. Gym this week, nails and hair next, popping down to see mum... Face it, you've got two more years petrol power coming your way. 🤣🤣🤣

I normally keep all three cars topped up. But of course I can’t drive at the moment so “they” have had to fill their own cars. My son filled his this morning and returned home somewhat ashen-faced.

The Guardian chose a photo of this stylish machine to illustrate the story. From that angle it could be a Skoda Superb or Chrysler 300C to the untrained eye. Has the photo been streeeetched ? Big cars do need a strong colour though Mercedes have never looked good in Burgundy or any red for that matter. They always manage to look a bit too chunky, my opinion anyway, for the nothing it's worth. God knows I'm a massive pro-European, but bloody hell. Germany is weird. First rule of buying fuel here is if you buy it on your way out somewhere it will be 2c/l cheaper on your way home or, if you leave it until the return journey it will be at least 5c/l more expensive.

In severe danger of treading on thin ice, but Merc used to do a very nice brown metallic that looked great on E Class estates.

It is a pretty long car — 4,965mm, I think — and, as that view also shows, it’s not especially tall by today’s standards. There are a few CLS SBs in a kind of hot pepper metallic red. I see one round here occasionally and it looks fabulous. It was also offered in the Caravan Site Blue you see on a lot of Cs but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that colour. I liked Diamond Silver, a Humph-offending pale silvery blue, but the car I tried in that colour was beyond my budget — and didn’t have the memory pack and heated rear seats that my grey one has. I think Humph’s brown is Indium Silver. There are press-release photos of the CLS in a darker brown but I don’t think it was ever offered here.
