Sage words welcome;
How many lessons should we be budgeting for? Any advice on choosing an instructor? Any recommendations? (She lives in Central Reading, so Al, any suggestions?)
Bearing in mind that I am not there and so cannot take her out practicing that may increase thr number of lessons she needs.
Any other thoughts?

Can’t really help TC, my son didn’t really “get on” with professional driving lessons and only had three two hour sessions to get him started before reverting to just practicing in his own car with me or his mother supervising.
Passed his test first go after 12 weeks of learning which began on his 17th birthday, but I guess he was in the car most days at some point during that learning period.
We didn’t especially treat it as lessons much, just got him used to driving while attending to other errands such as getting him to and from sixth form college etc.

There are I think two of us on here whose children are learning to drive, including my daughter.
My first piece of advice is to make sure she is comfortable with an instructor. Espadrillette went through three instructors (all men) before she found a lady who she vastly preferred. I suspect she does not know many people in the area, but if she can make friends with local sixth formers.. they will be a good source of info about local instructors. Don't be afraid to do one or two lessons and decide if she likes the instructor.
If she has no private car to practice on, she will need many more lessons. Just doing errands and going on short trips is invaluable for simply getting used to driving on the road and saving lesson time.
I would suggest at least 20 lessons if she has no other car to practice on but it depends on how adept she is anyway.

The right instructor is key. I was lucky. I had no chance of practicing in anyone's car so had to pay for lessons. Long term it's an investment and it takes as many lessons as needed. Better to pass when you can safely drive than to go early and get lucky.
I also had a motorway lesson which was really useful after passing. Well worth the money.

I can only say that my son is using the RED driving school. He likes it because he can book and manage everything on his phone. You get to choose instructor, and they have female instructors in Reading if that's what she wants. The guy my lad is using seems fine.
I suppose it depends on the individual as to how many lessons you need.
Lots of instructors bring their students up and down my avenue to begin with as it's straight, very quiet and no parked cars in the road. Ideal for the first few tries. So I might get to see her crawl past in the near future.

Thank you all.
Al, if you were old enough you'd have seen me driving along your road learning to drive in a purple Triumph Toledo.
As it is, and I've been in a 4x4 with her driving, should you see a female student-type with electric pink spikey hair and black make-up driving along your road with L plates I can only recommend a rapid withdrawal to somewhere safe and distant.
I appreciate the recommendation for RED.

...should you see a female student-type with electric pink spikey hair and black make-up driving along your road with L plates Face masks these days make most learner drivers look pretty much the same. The hair might just make the difference, though. Can we take it this means the hospital drama is behind her and she's back to full fitness?

Yes, I'm sorry, I should have given an update before. It was a rough time, and I suffered for not being there. Fortunately my sister is close and after #1 left hospital she spent a week with her recuperating.
Net feedback was RBH great, NHS 111 great, pharmacist(s) great, GP utter shite.

Hmmm, that's one way of looking at it. It is shocking and visible at a distance. Should you or Al, or I guess Smokie, see such a 20 year old around Reading town centre - it is VERY pink and VERY spiky and the make-up equally pointy and very black, then that's probably her. I don't quite get the fashion of boots with buckles, skin tight black jeans with many rips and holes, nose piercing and huge baggy jumpers but that is apparently because I "don't understand".
I was a First Year once, I bloody understand alright.

p.s. I must admit to smiling at the thought of the son of any contributor here turning up to Sunday lunch with her some time as the new girlfriend. Despite the fashion sense [pah] she's a very attractive girl, and quite unusual.
Unlikely, of course, but the thought amuses me.

I think Mrs A and I are beyond being shocked at a younger person's appearance - #1 is a bit too old for my lad though.
I think I was a First Year once. Don't remember much of it.

p.s. re: purple Triumph Toledo. I've only lived in this house since 2009, although it did occur to me recently that I've now lived here longer than any other home I've had. Been living in Reading since 1995. I'm aiming to be gone in about 8 years tops, and if I can also be gone from working for a living at the same time I will be doing that too.

I think the death certificate from "I'm aiming to be gone in about 8 years tops" will exclude you from "working for a living" unless Brexit goes really wrong and the Conservatives need as many people as possible working and passing the DWPs fit to work assessment. Then you will be DUFTO - Dug Up For The Occasion.

Daughter #1 sounds perfect for my Son #2 who has a nose piercing. We have got used to it - just. He does have character as well which is good. He has a two hour student radio show playing new Indy music each week. Even I sometimes enjoy it. And we do enjoy listening my father's favourite composer, Sibelius, so he has taste as well.
