My son is still pondering whether to go into sixth form at his old school next term or whether to move on to an FE college. In truth it'll be a decision based on a function of his GCSE results which we await with bated breath.
The sixth form is attached to his old secondary school and is within easy walking distance from our house but the nearest suitable FE college is about 5 miles away.
He's been saying that he'd cycle to college if that ends up being his choice but his bike is a bit too nice to leave parked in a college bike rack. In fact I reckon it wouldn't be there very long at all.
So, the plan is to do up one of the old clonkers in the shed for him to use. We'll not smarten up the paint or anything, on the contrary, it'll be left looking a bit tatty but we'll ensure that it is mechanically up together. Anything quick release will be converted to bolt on to save the hassle of casual wheel or saddle theft and clip on lights which can quickly be slung into his bag will be used.
The journey would involve a bit of road but most of it could be achieved using cycle paths so should be easy enough.

Its called the RAT look. Something very mechanically sound, dressed up to look very tatty. Guy round the corner from me has VW's done that way, its a real art to make sound body work look rusty

Its the same approach I use with my boots.
I have quite strong opinions on 6th Forms versus colleges. You learn a lot more and grow up a *lot* more at the college.

Tend to agree, but it'll be a decision based on the courses available to him and their relevance to the direction he decides to follow. Jury out right now.

And that, together with his results, is key Generally speaking*, boys are more immature, both educationally, socially and emotionally than girls, by at least a year, so I think the extra time at school can be a benefit for them. At 16 most boys have not a clue what they want to do. Depends of course on how good the 6th form is. Sometimes for boys a year out in work or travel is a good idea before returning to FE. *yes of course anyone knowns and can name an exception.

And now I find that eggballs has started a new thread on the subject where this should be.
