Which manufacturer started the trend of reversing the direction of the tachometer dial, and why on earth..? (Both old fashioned dials or imitation digital ones).
Very unpleasing to the eye in this luddite’s opinion! 2 dials sweeping in opposite directions. If it ain’t broke blah blah...
Not that I even look at the speedometer dial any more; have become totally accustomed to digital speed readouts instead. But visually, a rev counter dial going backwards, grrrr!

FIAT X1/9 in the 70s and Lancia Delta integrale in the late 80s. Not sure if the 911 did it in the 60s.
Edit: I like my bike setup, big analogue rev counter and big block digital Speedo. No fuel gauge, use one of two odometer counters.

Really? I had an X1/9 and I don't remember that. I'm sure you're right, but I am surprised that it didn't stick in my mind. Irritation usually does.

I searched a few images some cars had them some were 'normal'. Italian lucky dip build which one you got.   |

Ah, that makes sense. It is the sort of irritating thing that would stick in my mind.
In those days a combination of my boy-racer attitude, lack of skill and driving style meant I paid attention to the rev counter. These days the rev counter is of little interest to me (no high performance vehicles, no silly driving) but I just know that a backwards one would keep catching my eye.
I also feel slightly lonely when driving a vehicle without a rev coutner.

The digital dashboard in my Focus is a bit of overkill, depending on the driving mode changes the colour and font.
Give me the Sport screen and a little Snowflake symbol if in winter/slippery mode would work for me.
The previous RS had three little gauges on top of the dashboard for oil temp, pressure and turbo boost. Never read them once while giving it the beans, too small to read while watching what was coming at me down the road.

For digital displays there is an argument for the ones not trying to recreate a digital version of a round dial, that putting the rev and speed gauges opposite each other and sweeping in opposite direction makes sense. It frees up the space in between to display maps and other things.
But for real dials - no it does not make sense to me. The BMW 3 series Pro with the digital dials would have the rev counter sweeping the other way. I have mine displaying something other than revs usually (power %age used / recharge) unless I put it in sport mode.

S-Max had it and it worked really well. I think quite a few pre-war cars had them. I can understand that it's not intuitive if you are used to a analogue watch, but does it really matter?

Doesn’t really bother me which way it reads as long as it does. I use them quite a lot it seems, evidenced I suppose by missing having one in the Aygo.
Handy to have in the six speed manual Jeep and to a lesser extent in the 7 speed automatic Merc if I’m using the flappy paddles.

Funnily I miss it too, in our Aygo. But not, of course, in the i3. Another thing that won’t matter for much longer.
But while we’re doing irritating design decisions, who thought it would be a good idea to number rev counters with a 10-20-30 scale that’s too similar to the speedometer to avoid confusion? (Especially if you have a VW group car that puts the tacho where the speedo ought to be, and something else where it’s in the right place.)

The Renegade nags you to change up or down with a little display arrow thingy on the dash. I don’t always agree or comply.

I hate those. Civic does it when in flappy paddle mode. IIRC every auto we've had with manual option does it when in manual mode.
