Does anybody play the guitar?
We went to a charity shop last week, and they had a guitar for sale. I've never played, and thought I could have a go. I didn't (and don't expect) much from it, but just for a bit fun over the Christmas break it was worth buying.
It's something called an Encore, it's an acoustic guitar and appears to have some sort of volume/tone control on it and a socket I assume would go to to an amp. I haven't explored any of that.
Anyway, I fired up Youtube, found someone telling me how to play a chord or two, and have tried a few times. My god it hurts my fingers though.
The question is - is the left hand finger pain (I can manage about a minute before it's agony) going to ease and I have to just get through that, or should I have picked up an ocarina or something instead?
PS. It cost me three pounds.

"... is the left hand finger pain (I can manage about a minute before it's agony) going to ease...?"
Yes, it will. You can speed it up a bit by applying surgical spirit or meths to your finger-tips, which is pleasantly cooling and dries the skin. Gradually "pads" of hard skin will form.

Bert Weedon's Play in a Day...
If you promise not to try the opening to Smoke on the Water, I'll buy the book for you.

Oh, that's encouraging, thank you. I have neither in the house, but after Christmas. I shall persevere then. Sorry, have a burning urge to try to play a D chord. Ow!

If you don’t have any meths or whatever, I guess whisky, gin or vodka is worth a try… 😉

I don't have any of those either. I'm not allowed alcohol. Which was a blow when first diagnosed twenty five years ago, but don't notice it now.

I am allowed alcohol, but I just don’t bother with it very much. Last time I had a drink involving alcohol was last Boxing Day. Rather nice malt as it happens. I may just decide to have something on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day this year just to mix it up a bit. I have no moral, religious or medical motivations towards abstinence, it’s just not something I do, or ever have done all that much. Quite like the taste of some drinks, whisky on a cold day or beer on a warm one or whatever, but I absolutely hate the feeling of having my senses compromised, or indeed my choices limited (driving etc) Which seems to make me odd, but I’m fairly sure I don’t care if people think that.

When we are not permitted to drive such the Sabbath, which starts at sunset on Friday, is probably the only time when I do drink. A decent wine or a nice single malt. Makes for a pleasant evening meal.

I don't drink and drive, ever. But that rather more limits my driving than my drinking. [E-Scooters are great].
But senses compromised? If I go out for a drinking evening then I guess that is usually three beers, On an occasional and particularly pleasant evening that might get finished off with a G&T. I've no doubt that I am compromised to an extent, but not to any level that I notice. I do, quite often, really enjoy a drink. Though never alone.
