I am a bit confused by the payment options for my son once he starts work.
He will be living in Hendon and working in Croydon. Having checked out the best route, it looks like it is Hendon Central on the Bank line to somewhere in the City (Farringdon?) and then a Southern Trains route to East Croydon.
We are trying to find out what the best option is in terms of a Travelcard or simply tapping in each day. The TfL website says Travelcards are not available for this route which makes little sense.
Anyone from closer to the Smoke have any ideas?

Isn't this what Oyster card was supposed to iron out ? I thought it worked out the optimum payment for your journey up to a limit.

That's what I thought but Travelcards claim to be cheaper than the maximum one day charge if you buy a weekly, monthly or annual ticket.
It's really unclear.

Is the problem that part of the journey is Southern Trains and outside the scope of Oyster/Travelcard?
I've only ever used an Oyster on buses and the underground and don't even bother with that if visiting London now and just tap in/out for the journey with a bank card.
EDIT: Thinking about it, it must include trains within the zones.... so I wonder why it says a Travelcard is not available??

I thought that Travelcards only worked for certain periods of the day - i.e. they cannot be used before 9:30am (which rules them out for most commuters)?

What zone is East Croydon in? Is it 5? I wonder if it's only possible to get a Travelcard for zones 1,2,3,4 anytime and 1 to 6 off peak? And besides the capped rate is lower? Just a thought.
When I tried looking though even putting in zones 1 to 4 it says there are no travel cards but if I put in 1 to 3 it lists one for zones 1-4 antime.

Zones 1 -6 gave £3,250 for a one year card!!

Ha! I am seriously hoping that after he manages to find a woman he wishes to settle down with, and gets himself qualified, he then decides that marriage and family is far better in Manchester than London. I shudder to think of the cost of insurance for his car next month...

How much is it going to cost to run a car in London over the same time ? Congestion zone costs or whatever it is being called today, parking, insurance, road tax, servicing, depreciation, fuel, time commuting. The card may actually not be that expensive by comparison just a big chunk to pay out in one go.

A lifetime ago I lived in Fulham and worked in the West End. Spent the first three months using the tube, but fairly quickly decided that really wasn't suitable for humans.
Cycled in after that. Got a bit fitter too.

You mention Hendon Central which is on the Barnet/Mill Hill branch of the Northern Line.
Does Hendon station on Thameslink seem any better. Two trains an hour, one change. Journey time just sub one hour.
Depending on where he is in Hendon and distance from East Croydon to his office a folding bike might be a useful adjunct??

Funnily enough, I was thinking about the folding bike option too. It might be a bit far to cycle the whole journey twice a day every day, but splitting it somehow between public transport and a folder seems like being worthy of investigation if time/cost savings could be achieved.

Can't see him cycling. It's not really his forte at all and busy London roads would give him total panic stations.
But the Thames Thameslink option does need to be more closely explored. It's a longer walk though, possibly too long.

To paraphrase an old joke: “How do I get to East Croydon?”
<sucks teeth> “Well I wouldn’t start from here...” 😬😂
