Friend of mine bought a new Merc A220 a few weeks ago. Scared himself to death when his steering input (wanting to change lanes) was counteracted by lane departure software. He promptly turned off that feature.
Yesterday my neighbour picked up his brand new Merc GLE and had a similarly scary moment on his drive home from the dealership. Also scouring the menus to disable the software this morning! Is it just Mercedes?! Do you have such electronic frippery Humph in your hearse?
Another pal who picked up his new Subaru last week also has the feature but finds it easy to override with minimal steering input. He’d also heard that the Merc system was intrusive...
Who needs it anyway? If you can’t drive between the lines without AI then it’s time to hand in your license I reckon!

Thankfully mine is not afflicted. It does though have a self parking thingy, but I’ve never used it. A bloke who can’t park his own car in two moves max needs to hang his head in shame in my view. 😉

It actaully prevented him from steering the car where he wanted? I didn't know these things did that, I thought it was just an audible warning. Was the driver indicating at the time? Surely if indicating the car would "know" you're about to manoeuvre and not stop you from doing it?
Good Lord. I don't like the sound of this.

In nearly four years, I’ve never used the self-parking thingy either although it keeps popping up the little P icon to remind me it’s there. I very seldom need to do a parallel park anyway, but I’d like to have a practice run before using it in earnest. Maybe next time I’m driving home late at night, I could find a space and try it out while nobody’s watching.
I decided against paying £800 for the package of driver assistance gizmos offered for the i3S. Not sure if that includes lane keeping, but there is automatic braking and self-driving in traffic jams, neither of which is much of a chore anyway. (Driving the Aygo home through a jam this week was a nasty reminder of the old days.)
I suppose all these features are beta-testing for software that will be required in truly self-driving vehicles. Finding and fixing the bugs now will save time later.

I guess I’d at least consider a manual again, don’t really mind shifting gears, but on balance I’d still prefer an automatic. Just get a bit bored with a clutch in traffic.

Just get a bit bored with a clutch in traffic. Exactly. But it’s not going to be a problem for anyone for much longer.

I think the steering input system is now tied in to Euro NCAP ratings, you can't get 5* without it. The KIA is damned annoying, every time you switch the ignition on the lane departure system with steering input is on and auto hold is off. Two button presses required before moving off each time. There are a few lane narrowing islands near here requiring you move over the white line. I'd hope the system would look the other way if you indicate but no, KIA beeps and the steering fights back every time when the system is on. Progress.

My mate with the A220 wanted to make a quick lane change when a truck pulled out in front of him. The steering fought back, lots of bells and whistles sounded, and the car tried to steer him back towards the errant truck! Said it kinda felt like an uncontrollable skid feeling 😬.
The system defaults to On every time he starts up the car 😡

My 330e has the lane assist which can be disabled or set at a few different levels. There is no audible warning.
It only works above 40mph and if lanes detected, will put up resistance (amount can be changed) if you try to change lanes without indicating. It can also be set to try to keep you in lane. But it is not auto steer (which I had and used in the Superb).

I've just had the joy of driving a part of the M25, and my word it doesn't sound like you want a system like that operational during a voyage round that particular ring of insanity.

My car got an upgrade last week. One of the changes is that it will now remember the lane departure settings when you next turn it on, i.e. if you turned it off completely before it would be back on again the next time you started the car.
