You do seem to have jolly cheap insurance in the UK. Another reason, if you are going to emigrate do it while young are young. Full NCD in the UK only translates as SF9, effectively 9 years accident free, in Germany. The SF number goes up by 1 for each claim free year to a max of 35 I think it is, each increase is effectively cancelled out by inflation, convenient. I paid 1200€ for a Focus RS with SF14, the ST dropped to 720€ with SF15. My mate with the 530i is paying 875€ with SF29

The Jeep is £200 for two of us. The Merc, ( business travel and high mileage policy ) for two of us is about £400 I think, but I'd lost most of my NCB rights by having a company car so that should get better in time. The Aygo, insured by my son, but with us named is about £480 ( he's 21 )

Incidentally, we did check to see what it would cost to add my son as named driver on the Jeep ( just thought it'd be good for him to get some experience of a slightly larger, more powerful car )
It was an extra £300 so we declined, we'll wait until he hopefully gets another year of NCB discount.
It is sort of ironic I suppose, one of my first company cars at his age was a 3.0S Capri. Not all that fast or sporty by today's standards, but it was regarded as so then. I managed to keep that upright and on the Tarmac ok. Shame really that the younger people of today are priced out of anything with an engine.

I added my eldest, who's 27, to my Volvo insurance for 80€. I was quoted 120€ to add him to the Grand C-Max soccer-mom van, he expressed a preference for the Volvo oddly enough.

I wish. His income is currently inextricably linked to mine.

About 10 or 11 years ago, I arrived at Rome airport late one Sunday evening, I'd pre-booked a basic car at Hertz or one of the usual suspects anyway. I was looking at a week of mooching about northern Italy on various errands. Any old how, they had run out of basic cars and told me I would get a free upgrade. That was a short lived excitement when it turned out to be a 1.6 diesel C Max. However, as the week went on, I became quite fond of it. Comfortable thing that was really no trouble. Not very exciting of course, but a useful tool that did not offend in any way.

In 2001/2002 we went to Italy twice and rented Foci estates with the TDDi and TDCi engines. Even the 'smoker' was better than I anticipated and the TDCi was excellent as was the whole car. Some car just do their job really well without attracting attention and Fords seem to do that very well.

We’ve arranged to collect the car on Monday morning. We discovered last week that it does after all qualify for the £2,500 government grant because its base list price, excluding options, is now below £35,000. (We had all supposed that the option prices would be counted in the calculation.) So thank you all (apart, obviously, from BPG and Norm) for that.

It's always nice to get those kind of surprises and you're welcome. Sadly, just because I'm not resident in the UK does not exempt me from tax totally.
Didn't get a vote on Brexit been away too long apparently but still get the benefit of taxation being a British citizen. Ho hum. More stick, yes please, it's what makes me British. Stick your carrot.

It is. I’d be on my way over there now but the finance people found some extra value in the old car and need a bit longer to adjust the paperwork. So we’re doing it at teatime instead.
No big black cloth reveal and handover this time, because apocalypse. But that’s mostly annoying salesman blather anyway so I won’t really miss it. MrsB1 is peeved because the new time means she can’t come to collect what she calls ‘my car’ (the paperwork says otherwise) but she’s out in it this evening, so I expect she’ll cope.
