What's in an S?

Bear in mind a lot of my mileage in the 330e has been more local as a percentage compared to the Superb, A3 and Passat CC. Average mpg comparison so far:
Passat CC 170PS TDI GT: 36.09mpg
Audi A3 1.4T S-Tronic S-Line: 34.36mpg
Skoda Superb 1.4T DSG SEL Exec: 35.21mpg
BMW 330e SE: 38.41mpg
And best mpg:
Passat CC 170PS TDI GT: 47.63mpg
Audi A3 1.4T S-Tronic S-Line: 48.03mpg
Skoda Superb 1.4T DSG SEL Exec: 50.96mpg
BMW 330e SE: 55.39mpg
I know some of the 330e miles have been on electric from plugging it in but that's usually been used for short journeys. Only last weekend did I start with 91% charge and then have a chance to recharge to full (and pre-cool) before setting off for home. But I also made use of the Xtraboost a couple of times too.
