It’s not really worth doing anything for a headline saving of 200 quid a month Al. 4-500 then maybe a different story. To try and save £50/week you’d be buying something 12+ years old that costs more in tax and fuel before even thinking about maintenance and reliability concerns. Does 50 quid a week even buy a family a decent Indian takeaway these days..?! That entirely depends on 2 things: how may pounds you get a month and how many miles you're likely to drive the car in a month. The answer to both in my case is "not many". £200 a month is a lot of money to me at the moment particularly against eh backdrop of impending rising cost of living, and as for the petrol, well I have to put petrol in the Civic sometimes too.

You're not going to find many large family cars with much lower VED bands nor higher MPGs (sticking with petrol). It's moot. Just came down from up North today, 5 degrees C, couple of hundred miles. 58mpg on the computer at the end, and half that in VED annually. Skoda Octavia petrol auto. Pretty big car. Yes but sadly I discount VAG cars from my list of possibles, because I don't want an old DSG because it gives me, rightly or wrongly, the fear of large repair bills. An Octavia would indeed be pretty much my ideal car, if it weren't for that. My shortlist is, all things considered at great length and depth, Mondeo, Mazda 6, Avensis and Accord. That's it. Petrol, TC auto.

If you genuinely are doing minimal mileage in all your cars, then it’s the Leaf you could most live without right now.
But, that’s a “want” rather than a “need” thing it seems.
If you were to bin the Leaf and replace it with a cheap runaround somethingorother as back up to the Honda…

I didn't say I'm doing minimal mileage in all my cars. The Leaf does at least 20-30 miles a day at the moment plus weekend outings, now that normality is returning. It's the best car for the job. I know you're desperate for me to cave in and admit I've been wrong for nearly 5 years now, but it remains staggering value to own and run, and the best possible way to do the local running about, which is now the clear majority of all my miles, in what appears to be complete reliability. I'm not entirely convinced that a car which costs £150 a month to own and £25 a month fuel is more expensive than one which costs £200 a month to own and £150 to fuel either.
I get in the Leaf all charged up and pre-heated every morning at 7.30, whilst I witness my neighbour's diesel van thrumming away on his drive way whilst he waits indoors for it to heat up and dispel the frost or dew on the windows. Who doesn't love being greeted with the smell of copious diesel fumes evey morning, eh?
I remain utterly confused as to why you're persisting with projecting your motoring "needs and wants" and feelings about EVs on to others.

Soon the option to buy a nearly new Mondeo will be gone because you can't really buy a new one - only a few prebuilt ones in stock now. Next Mondeo will only be available in China as a saloon - and it looks good too but won't sell enough in Europe.

And I’m not suggesting that you shouldn’t revisit the EV route in due course once your circumstances change, but if you’d like a temporary solution to your current cash flow issues, then replacing the Leaf with a cheap and cheerful, low running cost hack would be one way to do that.
Might be a good little Aygo for sale near you soon I hear. Dodgy indicator switch but sounds fixable… 😉

Great shame Rob, yes we apparently all only need or want SUVs in Europe now. What a sad situation. Pathetic really.

Ummm... plan B. Sell the Civic and don’t replace it with anything for 6 months. See how you get on. And save a few quid in the meantime?
It’s all about choices. SWMBO makes ‘em all in my household 😬😂

Now that Dixi, is a very sensible suggestion. Removes all the Civic costs, might put a bit back in the bank for a while and, hire cars are available in the event of unforeseen short term need/emergency.
Used prices are currently high, so the Honda could do well at the moment and in due course, if they ease a bit, it may be possible to get something suitable at a better price than it would be now.
There, sorted.

Buying second hand is something I want to avoid at the moment partly because prices are high and partly because I don't want to lose out when I don't need the car if plans work out.

SWMBO makes ‘em all in my household 😬😂 I'm subject to the same decision tree here...SWMBO would not be happy if there was no car on the drive with an automatic gearbox whenever she needed one. e.g. if I were out in the Leaf, and she had a sudden need. So I don't think that leaving a space on the drive is going to work.

How much of a problem is that really though? Balancing occasional slight inconvenience versus considerable savings at a time when you say that the latter would be more than useful?
Or am I being too logical?

Man maths with cars is never logical...

This seems to be woman maths. Which seems even harder.
