I met him very briefly once about 15 years ago maybe. Clearly didn't suffer fools gladly but I suspect that his position vis a vis HMQ made life almost impossible and doubt any of us would have done a better job. Pity he didn't make it to 100.

Yes, but probably brought in billions of pounds worth of trade to the UK... and raised similar amounts for charity and benefitted many youngsters including my own in the DoE Award scheme

Was just saying to Mrs H over the sardines on toast, that when someone who is such a famous public figure lasts as long as he did, that there can be few people left who can remember a time when they were not around.
A childhood memory was seeing him flying into RAF Turnhouse quite often in his signature red helicopter.

The FT the other weekend did a feature on Louis Mountbatten’s Jaguar, also painted in a signature colour — in this case a pale shade of blue that would cause grievous upset to Humph and doesn’t do much for me either. Seems he used to clamp his royal insignia to the roof and drive it however he liked.

I can't believe it's over 7 years since I saw him and the Queen locally. Time has flown since I've been in this house. I wonder what Humph thinks of her Majesty's Bentley? In fact the one I saw must be one of at least two similar models. I quite like burgundy on big cars, but it can look a bit odd on small ones. Nothing automotive looks it's best in pale blue though.

Listening to the news this morning, it appears he’s still dead and that it’s getting very difficult to find anything more to say about him — although the editor has clearly told everybody to keep trying.
