My council tax bill arrived today. It’s gone up, as we were warned it would. But the largest increase is to what I pay for the red-faced Tory buffer who occupies the post of Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley. He’s gone up by 6.9 percent, and now takes 11 percent of my council tax; that’s almost £400.
I was never keen on politicising this function in the first place, and voted for all the independents and none of the party-sponsored candidates. I’m even less keen now I see how much it costs.

Haven't quite understood the function. Why have a layer of politicians? Surely the local council leader can nominate a councillor to do the job; like a cabinet member?

Police and Crime Commissioners, who I think have had Fire added to their responsibility, were a creation of the coalition. Apparently a US style Commissioner is more accountable than the previous arrangement with council nominees.
I suspect that, like the precept for Social Care, increases in the charge for Police etc reflect the distribution of money from Westminster/Whitehall rather than choices made by the Commissioner of whichever stripe.
No doubt our CT will have a similar rise but, possibly because Local Government in Northamptonshire is being re-organised, we've yet to see a 21/22 bill. The as yet unelected Shadow Unitary has though agreed a budget.

Got the bill now. Total up 4.99% from last year. At the moment the amounts set differ according to which of the three authorities combining to form West Northants one lives in. Presumably there will be an exercise over time to even them all up. One good thing is that support for Council Tax paid to people on benefits is set at a max of 80%; a vast improvement on what the Borough paid.
