Funnily enough it's just about the only thing on that Range Rover which does work well. I'm hopeful he's going to come to his senses shortly and spend some money for once in his rapidly evaporating life and buy a new EV. He could bloody well afford it, the tight old sod.

I had a drive of a Renegade last week. About an hour on my own in a 1.4T (I think) in the Lake District. Long story.. With another couple we were walking up to the Old Man of Coniston when my boot sole detached about an hour into the walk. I hobbled down the mountain, drove my mate's Renegade (on DOC cover) back to our place, bought a new pair of boots in the local outdoor shop and later on when back to collect the three intrepid explorers.
I have to say that compared to the I5 it was a bit agricultural, and not overly quick to accelerate at 70mph, but actually, I thought the driving position was excellent. Good visibility; chunky, easy to use controls; even the six-speed gearbox was pretty decent. I know it's only a Fiat 500X in drag but I have been in far worse cars. Th eonly thing I don't like is the ride in the rear seats. A weird and bad combination of too bouncy and rock hard.

That rear seat comfort must be Jeep input. I was given a lift once in the back of a Grand Cherokee. I'm not the tallest in the world at 5' 11", got fed up of banging my head off the roof driving around the Amsterdam motorway ring. The seat was like two transport pallets nailed together in a 90 degree L.

My wife still loves hers (it is also the 1.4T manual) in fact she says she just wants to keep it forever. She’s had it for two years now and so far anyway, it has been faultless. I borrowed it for a long day out a few weeks ago while my car was in for a service. Nigh on 400 miles in one day actually. Perfectly comfortable thing. Got a bit bored with the manual gearbox but I suppose that wasn’t really its fault. If I didn’t need the loadspace of my car I could quite easily live with one.

Actually, re the above, my wife has said it feels like a big Panda! (Another car she loved owning back along) To be honest, wherever its parts came from or were assembled, the sum of them just works for her so all good.

Here’s a thing (not especially specific to Renegades) but at the time I used ours for a long trip the price difference between diesel and petrol was still significant. Trivially perhaps, but the cost per mile then in the less fuel efficient petrol car was pretty much the same as that of the less thirsty diesel. It’d not be as favourable to the petrol one at the moment with both fuels being closer in price for now.

I noticed that diesel was significantly cheaper in Italy than petrol at the moment. By 10s of cents per litre. Was a bit surprised.

One of Macron’s first acts in government was to change the taxation rules that had significantly favoured diesel in France. Since 2018 the prices have been roughly level, or distinguished by underlying costs, as in the UK. (I haven’t been to France for three years, though, so I may be out of date.) Edit: looks like I may be. Although from this it’s different from the UK in that diesel prices are similar but petrol notably higher.

Diesel was about 10 cents/litre more expensive than E10 petrol at the end of COVID here in Germany, something I'd never seen before.
Diesel was always 20 - 30 cents cheaper due to company car drivers, taxis and HGVs using it and paying higher road tax and being offset by the better fuel consumption.
Prices of everything in the shops rocketed as I'm sure they have everywhere. I'm sure some increase can be attributed to the increased transport costs but not all of it.
The gap is now back to 26 cents today in favour of diesel.

Yes, I remember holidaying in Alsace in 2018, 20 minutes from the border, and finding it paid to fill up during our German days out rather than our French ones.
