This popped into my inbox yesterday. My first thought was, I don’t like the colour. Then, I’ve already got one that’s barely out of the box, why do I need a new one? Then I noticed the very low interest rate and felt a spreadsheet coming on. My instinct, come the car’s fourth birthday in November, will still be to pay the residual and carry on. But a new one would go a third further on a charge, let us dispense with the range extender generator, and keep that big chunk of capital in the bank a little longer. It sounds like there are deals to be done, so I’ll take a closer look.

The one outside still seems shiny, to be honest. It’s as new as any car we’ve had on the drive in the last decade, and the same age now as the E and the 325 were when they arrived here. Replacing it now would be (almost) a purely financial decision.
I suppose, if we got another white one and transferred our yearless plate (well, it’s notionally from 1999) to it, few people would even notice.

I suppose I'm still of a mind to wait to see what the world looks like after the apocalypse before I turn my mind to any long term financial commitments. It may well be different in your field of endeavour, but the marketplace I operate in has been utterly devastated by Brovid. How long it will take to recover, and what form that takes is tough, if not impossible to forecast.
The cars on my drive are all bought and paid for, and all do what is required of them, so for now, I'll be sticking with those.
I can see that if you choose a different way to finance your cars it might make sense to update, but at the moment the only regular costs mine generate are servicing, fuel, RFL and insurance.

On the extra range point, would you actually use it? This is one of the things I used to justify upgrading from a 24kwh to a 30kwh Leaf. But genuinely, I don't need the extra range. Because I use the other car for long trips, and 80-100 miles is more than enough for daily local use.
But shiny, yes.

Extra range — well, yes, quite possibly. It would bring most of our day-trip destinations within range on a single charge. Of course, the Rex makes this possible already, but using it feels a bit, well, dirty. I took the car on a short journey last weekend and it insisted on running its ‘maintenance cycle’ as I drove it through town. I doubt anyone else noticed but it felt awkward to me.
So as we do fewer four-up journeys, we might choose to use the smaller car more often. (It already does more journeys, but fewer miles, than the big one.) Or we might hasten the arrival of an iPace and use that instead. 😋

I’m with Humph, sitting tight for a while. My finances have actually improved during/thanks to the zombie apocalypse, but am squirreling it away ‘cos we ain’t out of the woods yet.
Weird thing in these parts: fancy European cars (new or used) seem to be becoming scarcer and more expensive, whereas brand new Japanese/Korean cars are getting ever cheaper.
I liked the REX element of the i3, but I think I read somewhere recently that the REX part hasn’t been totally reliable?

If any of you listen to the Smith and Sniff podcasts ( Richard Porter and Jonny Smith ) you might have heard the debate on the replacing of Richard Porter's family car.
He had an IPace on some kind of finance arrangement but it's gone back now. Living in London he needs a ULEZ friendly replacement but doesn't want to spend a fortune. Fed up with kids and dogs trashing expensive cars. He's been looking at old petrol Range Rovers but is put off by the potential reliability issues. And he doesn't want to go back to EV right now having tried it and found it difficult to live with, having no off street parking, and the need for a car with enough range to cope with family holidays.
Anyway, this week he recalled that one of the nicest cars he's ever had was a 350 diesel CLS shooting brake ( like wot you have WDB )
So, he's foraging about looking at used, petrol CLS shooting brakes.
Quite fun to listen to those two, they release a new podcast every Monday.
