Yeah, but it was really dark, all the other cars were frozen over, and I only took it to Sainsburys to fill it up with petrol and get a bag of hash browns. Surely I'm not to feel too bad about myself? I deliberately didn't speak to anyone. |

Yes I drove and enjoyed plenty of Vauxhalls up to the mid/late 90s models. Thereafter, meh. Would have gladly owned Cavalier, Astra etc from that period, but the opportunity never presented. I do occasionally cast an eye at Astras and Insignias from about 2010 onwards. I think those are OK again. I don't think the marque too awful, just that better things always seem to present themselves as options. I remember test driving the Zafira when we were looking for a brand mew Mum Truck in 2004. But we went for the Touran. Was just somehow more appealing, despite being a bit more expensive. I'd have probably gone for it, but Mrs A wobbled at the badge. And it was a car for her at the time.

I'm mildly ashamed to confess that I had a baseball cap on. I'm not really a hat man, but it was freaking freezing, and that hat was a freebie from a footwear brand I used to have a business relationship with, and it hangs on a peg in the utility room for emergency use and...

I think we saw the effect of accounting-driven US management from the mid-1990s onward. Before that, Opel (Vauxhall was only ever a badge) had enough autonomy to design for the European market, not just to please its masters in Detroit.
Now those masters are in Mulhouse instead. It’s probably too soon to judge the results but given that they’re mostly lowbrow crossover blobs, it probably doesn’t matter too much.

I had a Mokka as a renter in Italy a while back. Not sure exactly what engine, but it was a small diesel with a manual box. Can't say I fell in love with it, but it was more than ok. Comfortable enough and went ok. I can see why people would think it was fine as a family wagon if the price was right, but I couldn't imagine rushing out to drive it for the fun of it. Just a standard issue sitty uppy car generic to the times I suppose.

Try it, you might be pleasantly surprised if not delighted. Ham off the bone, cherry tomatoes, little gem lettuce, cheesy coleslaw, hash browns and a French stick. Bit of mustard. |
