As I said on here before, I've run some quotes for insurance based on a 17 year old at my address with a new full licence. £900 for a Citroen C1, £1200 for a Volvo C30 1.6. I also ran a quote yesterday against a pre reg 70 plate FIAT Tipo 1.4 manual estate which I saw on autotrader. £1100. Which is less than I was expecting. But still, quite a lot of money, when added to spending on petrol in an old banger too (which I'm not used to doing any more). However, if I found an 18 plate example of the Tipo estate, the screen price is just under the £7k mark. Which I could PCP for £90 a month less than the Civic costs me, add the insurance with the boy being main driver and I'm coming out roughly even, and still only 2 cars on the drive and 2 sets of running costs.

Some numbers to ponder for those thinking of getting teenagers mobile.
My son was 17 in 2017. We bought the Aygo which was then 7 years old, one owner, FSH, 39,000 miles for £3000 ( negotiated down from £3200 ) from our local Skoda dealer as it happens. £20 RFL.
We bought insurance on it in my name, with him as a learner and my wife as a named driver. That cost about £400 as I recall.
Driving lessons were £45 I think and he had 6 of those with the rest of his learning being with one of us. Sat his test on his own car.
After he passed his test, he got his own policy with us as named drivers. That cost about £900 for the first year. Initially he had to have a "black box" telematics thingy, but he was able to gain credits for safe driving and after three months the insurance company allowed him to remove that.
The second year, his policy came down to about £750 and in the third it came down again to about £500.
Should be a further saving next time, and so on up to 5 years provided he doesn't bend it.
Being a Toyota, the car, despite the best efforts of a new driver, has so far, been faultless.
He didn't take it to university when he was living in, but I believe that it would have been necessary to declare that, had that been the case.
So, all in all, not a cheap excercise, but not maybe as scary as is traditionally put about.

Yeah, but the problem with your son being the Tipo main driver, is that if the reality is, that you are actually the main driver...
Still stuffed.

I suppose, your other dilemma Al, is that whatever you do for your son, you'll probably have to do something similar for your daughter in due course. Same for you WDB with your youngest.
As a result of that scenario, my brother in law has a very full drive/garage. Some of it his own doing, but he has a car, his wife has a car, he has two motorbikes, his son has a car, and his daughter has a car. That's a lot of engines. Especially if you add in the lawn mower...
Oh and he has a caravan too.

Yeah, but the problem with your son being the Tipo main driver, is that if the reality is, that you are actually the main driver... Still stuffed. While he's in the sixth form, he would probably be main driver. But that can be swapped if circs change. Not really a problem. If he goes to University and doesn't take it with him (likely, frankly, the Aberdeen scenario is just a flight of fancy, I expect he'll go somewhere within England and with restrictions on cars being on campus - he fancies Birmingham at the moment for some reason I can't quite fathom) then we use it for the younger child to learn in and she becomes main driver to take it to school etc etc...all the time me and Mrs A are likely to be fine sharing the Leaf and use the other car for long trips to my Mum's, tip runs, holidays etc, as we do at the moment with the Civic.

Just realised. If Son #2 leaves home to live in a student house in south Manchester come September, I'll have to tell the insurance won't I?

If he takes his car, yes. Might be worth getting a quote, depends on postcode etc of course. But, if he left his car at home, and only used it now and then, he'd be ok to leave it as is.

He'll be taking it with him. I worry about it closer to the time.

So South Manchester is probably the Fallowfield area - where would he park the car? Is this a first year in halls or a second/third year in a house. I'd imagine the insurance will be quite a bit higher.

Some big student houses in the Ladybarn area. Not that far from me. Not sure the car will be used much as a student but that's your/his choice. Parking limited/expensive at the university campuses. I'd leave it at home and come to get it on the rare occasion I needed it. It's only the other side of Manchester. The ones at university with me that had cars mostly only used them to get home at the end of term, maybe drive to the cinema at Belle Vue and similar. None of my business of course. EDIT: And I do realise Mauldeth Road goes all the way to Withington and beyond (as Mauldeth Road West) until you get to Chorlton You only said South Manchester so could be anywhere like Burnage end, Ladybarn, Fallowfield, Withington... etc

I know. He is at Salford University so the need for the car is more obvious. He is moving to Mauldeth Road as the people he is sharing with are all at Manchester Uni - mainly medicine I think. People he has known since he was a child going on sleep-away camps with the youth group he is a member of.

I think I'm (slightly hesitantly) coalescing around a 3-car plan. Hand the Civic back in August, and buy something like this outright: www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202102048684533That will serve as a my "big" and "long distance" car, and the kids can practice in it whilst learning. Then, when he's got his licence, a smaller old banger for him. I'm half tempted to go and grab that Avensis now to be honest, it's seems a very good buy.

I'm half tempted to go and grab that [Avensis] now... We’ve all suffered mentally this last year. Didn’t know it had got that bad, though. We’re here for you. 🤗
