Took a call from an occasional client a couple of weeks ago. I was in Cornwall, he was at his home in the south of France, from where he had been working for the whole of the pandemic. I think the word that first came out of my mouth is defined as 'the child of unmarried parents'... Lots of friends of mine living in Israel, working remotely as UK lawyers and accountants. Somehow I can't survey a building from 2,500 miles away.

I've said on a forum we've been on before of a friend that worked as an IT 'guru' who was REALLY important and he lived and worked on his yacht. If he had to attend a customer site then he'd dock in a country with an international flight and fly to deal with it.
I could do my job of the last 10+ years from anywhere. The fact is I am less than 10 miles from an office. But I go at most once a year it seems and even then that could probably be avoided. Maybe I'll go more often because the easier route is around the M60.... the shorter route is potentially stop-start and so shorter but similar petrol use... If I get some electric at the office it would be free and the shorter route more suited to electric anyway.

>> But if you are already WFH, where home is makes little difference.
Contractually, I am a flexible worker or something like that. I can work from home etc. But my home is my contractual base even though not a home worker in HMRC terms. So when I move house in the UK even I am meant to ask, as I had to for the last move.

Interesting. Could you set up an office somewhere in thee Greater Manchester area and have that your contractual address which never changes. You could then be anywhere to work. You could use an accountant's address for that.

When I say office I mean one belonging to my employer.

I was not convinced I could justify the drive as essential travel in lockdown - well I always work from home not just now. So asked the lease company. They didn't know what was really allowed so asked dealer if the car would be driven or transported.... It will be transported.
I can still collect if I wish and I still might because it's a chance to drive further than I can for a few weeks. But it's also the chance for the delivery company to make money. I'll probably let them pick up the business and drop it off here.
EDIT: So I have petrol in the Skoda that I should use!

The Smart is being serviced and MOT'd on Monday, so both cars will get a bit of a run out (an hour in each direction). It would normally be only one car, and fill the day in otherwise, but this time it will be throw the keys at them and return at close of play to pick it up.
It could probably now come out of dealer servicing, but it's mildly unconventional, and the value of maintaining the breakdown service (a la Mercedes) softens the blow a bit.

Realised today I hadn't driven the Civic for a month, since it was serviced. So I used it for the school run this morning, and took a slightly longer route home, just to top the battery up, loosen the brakes and unsquare the tyres. It has become a very expensive, depreciating, paperweight/driveway ornament. If the pandemic had struck a couple of months earlier, I probably wouldn't have bought it.

Poor choice for glory hunting if you don't mind my saying so Rob. I have extensive experience of this though, I'm more of a misery hunter too. Although last night's result for Scotland was rather nice and unexpected, especially with a representative from our opposition nation in the living room with me...good job I make my own dinners.

The Smart is being serviced and MOT'd on Monday..... ...well, it was all dropped off nicely. Socially distanced and throw the keys at them. Hadn't had a call by 16:00, and I warned them I was an hour away, so I phoned them. "Oh, just got the job sheet back - I need to do the invoice and I'll phone you back in 10 minutes, 'cos our card m/c isn't working here and I need to go to parts". So, I set off and took the call in 30 minutes, in the car, hands-free (they take payment over the phone to avoid issues). All OK, no advisories (Health check but not MOT shows front discs lipped and slightly scored - no shit Sherlock, though it's only 11,000 miles). Checked the front "bonnet" today. Lock cover (which is a little bit of obscuring plastic that can't cost trade more than 50p) had lost its retaining lug (a bit of plastic that stops it dropping on the floor when it is prised off). I know it was there the day before it went in, because I have to remove it to get leaves out of the scuttle at this time of year - which was also what I was doing post-service. The bonnet hadn't been re-locked either. Why not just hold your hand up? Even if the part isn't stocked, the cost of ordering and apologising is minimal vs customer goodwill. (It is, of course, because the grease-monkeys feel threatened). Anyway "Jemima" is ordering one in for me. so we'll see how that goes. Main dealer servicing, pah!
