Quite a good podcast this week from Smith and Sniff. Discussing the new LR Defender. My favourite bit is when they discuss whether they should come with "One wife, livid" stickers...

Saw one of these in the metal last week: a dealer demo being fuelled up at the pump next to me. Looks very sharp in the metal. But pricing north of £50 grand???!! And will it be more reliable than its JLR stablemates?

they look good but how will they sell if starting price is around £50k. It's no longer the utility vehicle.

Same issue with the Ineos Grenadier. It will fail for the same reason the original defender failed. Everyone wants Taliban taxis now for farming etc.

£50k sounds like a lot in isolation and is indeed a big chunk of money to put into a depreciating asset, for me at least. How does that measure up for such a vehicle ? Is it the going rate or expensive ? I'm guessing not cheap from the comments.

I think Defenders will sell well and hold their value for the first year or so, as a must-have lifestyle accessory for the well-heeled; but then sales will probably tail off, especially if the electronics are as unreliable as in other Land Rovers.

The Ineos Grenadier should be made as a utility non-luxury vehicle and be aimed more at the £35k price point. It will instead appeal to those who like the original MB G-Wagon or maybe the retro styled new one.
People wanting to replace an old LR Defender will buy a pickup.

They’ve revised and updated the Defender power trains already?! What’s that all about?! Did they rush the car to market..?!

Saw a new Defender on the M6 earlier today. Now, I have a soft spot for Land Rovers having had one ( a 90 ) a long time ago. But, and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say this, I wasn't keen on the styling of the new one I saw today. Meh, is the best I could think. But, then again, maybe it's because it's for rich shepherds or something.

No. There’s a word for anyone who wants one of these, and it isn’t ‘shepherd’ because that implies the company of another creature.

Land Rover: for people who are too outdoorsy to walk anywhere.

I also saw a VW Amarok pick up today. Very interfered with thing, Way too clean, shiny black paintwork but with outrageously oversized and preposterously over treaded tyres, snorkel etc and a registration number that vaguely spelled "Pistol".
Bloke driving it was wearing some kind of camo jacket. Now, I've no idea who he was, or what he was, or maybe what he would like to be, but I'm not at all sure he'd be the sort of chap you'd invite to dinner.

Saw a Range Rover SVR last night with the reg that appeared to make him out to be a barrister. I thought barista was more appropriate given the car... Just way too tricked a flash git for a professional.
