The X1 doesn't do stellar mileage under normal circumstances (the Smart gets preferred for short trips, and the 'van gets used for holidays) so it hasn't had much of a run round for a good few months. A week last Sunday it had it's first Continental trip of the year to Ste Venage to see no.1 son, and yesterday it went to Somerset in parallel with the 'van, which was left there for service. The trip was combined with a meet with no.1 daughter, in Cheddar. It got driven to Somerset by SWMBO who, other than a short "acclimatisation" drive the evening before, hasn't driven since she broke her arm in November. She doesn't usually drive the X1 (in fact, I think she's only had one "trial run" since we bought it!). I've booked the PTSD debriefing session........... (for the car, not SWMBO ) It actually went very well (apart from the fact that she says she enjoys driving that car ) with a very quick journey down, and a slightly slower one back. I tend to go partially across-country rather than motorway plod all the way, and it is very little slower (and rather more enjoyable). What has impressed me is the fact that, over the last 500+ miles of varied, but fast(ish) running, the car is showing 44.6 mpg on the meter, which is not bad for a 2 litre, 4WD automatic (and damn near the official overall mpg).

Yes, that can be a problem, my wife shared the driving with me on last year's French run. Took a week or two afterwards to prise the keys to the Merc from her.
I know that area quite well, used to live in Bath and also in a small village near Wells at one time.
Even though "she" likes Sitty Uppy Vehicles, I think I could persuade her that a nice estate would be a thing.

On the other hand, I asked MrsB1 to take the CLS for her trip to Newbury last week — 30 miles each way, useful bit of motorway speed to burn off any accumulated particulates— and she insisted on the i3.

Wish Espadrille was the same. I can't think of one car I have owned that she has really liked . The S-Max was took big and heavy; as is the Merc. She saw few delights in either Subaru (Forester or Outback), none in my 1998 C200, little in the Peugeot 605 or even the Honda Accord 4WS. The Volvo S80 2.9 was dismissed like the E350.
The only cars we both really liked were her Mitsubishi Space Wagon (circa 1998 - 2003) and its replacment Honda CR-V. I don't mind her Clubman, but find the clutch and steering unnecessarily heavy.

It'd be handy enough if Mrs E would take the Merc out for a run while you're away though wouldn't it?

Mrs BPG has threatened to take my Focus out for a run before I hand it back. Never happened, I doubt it will either. She's scared of it. Once I get the replacement I suspect she will drive that and I will have issues getting the keys back. I think automatic will make the difference and the slightly more sane performance.

I’ve had some lovely porcine starters: prosciutto di Parma, salame di Milano, rillettes, pâté de foie...

Someone we know who is vegan had said Richmond veggie sausages were really good. They looked exactly as unappetising as a regular Richmond sausage (very pink!) when I saw them in the supermarket. But we did try some and they were okay. I think they had about as much meat as the meat version to be honest. But other veggie sausages we've had were better. Award winning apparently though.
Back to the X1.... have considered one as a PHEV. First off though is a 330e SE which I have for a long test drive the week after next (over 3 days). Just after I have an XC40 PHEV over the weekend. The Volvo XC40 in Inspiration Pro trim is the more expensive car and BIK tax is 12% but in reality it's about a £20-30/month difference to me after tax so between the two it's what I prefer. Still could try the X1, MINI Countryman, Ford Kuga, Mercedes A Class 250e Saloon, Pug 508, etc. Or even go for a non PHEV and pay a lot more tax.
I suppose I could take the cash allowance too. But I don't really want a car that I need to worry about if I can finally move to somewhere other than the UK soon.

Gave SWMBO’s Outlander a blast last week: 2 days and 250 miles up to and around Auckland and back. Had to take on 40km of muddy unsealed roads too, because the main highway was blocked by a landslide. The car’s filthy now, but I haven’t got around to cleaning it... A task for a rainy day!
