Prods. Technically I’m one but I can’t remember much about it all. It’s been more than a while.

Have you met the Wee Frees?
Apparently they make enjoyment feel like a sin.

That's the thing with a Golden Visa... you don't need to be resident. In fact you don't need to be in that country you've invested in at all. You get entry to all of the Schengen area. That's why they're making it more difficult now to stop Russians, Chinese, etc. being able to come and go.
It is the various type of Visa D you'd need to become tax resident.

Seems that there are plenty of other countries that will hand out a Golden visa in return for a cash deposit or the purchase of a property. I looked into Panama a few years ago, for example.
But to paraphrase Al, it’s not always much fun having 2 houses. You are always worrying about the one you’re not currently inhabiting…. Unless perhaps it’s a serviced apartment, but then again you have body corporate fees to pay even when you’re not there.
AirBnB seems to be falling out of favour in many cities - and the authorities haven’t really worked out how to tax the property owners’ extra lucre. But Al’s notion of renting a place for a few weeks/months at a time would be my route.
Plenty of folk around here have spent up to GBP£80k on motorhomes since the Covid chaos… not my cup of tea!

Aye. Going back to my retired motorhoming friends, I think they've spent about 200/250k on their new bespoke vehicle. But they're living in it permanently whilst drawing income from their portfolio of rental properties, so they're getting value for money. This is thems...there's even some classic car content on the latest blog. gailandkeithblog.com/

So they own multiple houses but live in a van?

Yes. Have done for 10 years now, very occasionally occupying one of their properties for a few weeks or months whilst empty or doing some renovations.

Does Church of Scotland mean Anglican or Presbyterian? Either way, they probably disapprove first and ask questions later, if at all. As a regular habitue of Lewis and Harris the eclectic mix of variations on the Protestant church is a source of some fascination. CofS is Calvinist but at the milder end of the spectrum!!

And I though the different sects of Hassidic Jews was confusing!

Was reading somewhere that Portugal is one of the “easier” countries to get residency status. Oddly enough I knew the north of the country very well at one time, (big shoe making industry there) but I’ve never got around to having a holiday in Portugal and don’t know the south at all. People say it’s very pleasant but I’d need to go and spend some time there. In a previous life (30 odd years ago, eek!) I lived and worked in Brazil so while not even nearly fluent, I can bumble along ok in basic Portuguese, so it might make integration a little easier. The Italians are paying people to move to Tuscany* www.thelocal.it/20240626/can-you-really-get-a-e30000-grant-to-move-to-tuscanyCaveat, must move into the mountains...It's easier to get a EU pensioners residency permit than a residency with work permit.

And I though the different sects of Hassidic Jews was confusing! What do they fall out over? The Sabbath? Oh ridiculous things like how the women cover their hair, or what things they are allowed to eat on Passover. Each sect has it's origins in a different village of Eastern Europe, and each village had it's own rabbi. Rabbis have authority to to determine religious rules autonomously - there is no overarching 'Pope' type person (The Chief Rabbi is effectively a secular position whose role is to represent the community to the nation and also acts as a figurehead but has little religious power). I would need an evening with a decent malt to explain it all coherently...
