Gas prices have jumped since I was here last summer. $3.69 per US gallon. ...that seems at odds with reported price trends (and also seems quite high against quoted average prices). Are you suffering the effects of being in a State with a high(er) rate of fuel tax?

US State tax on petrol varies dramatically (currently roughly in the range 15¢ to 60¢ per gallon).
Being in a different state from your previous visit (particularly if the current one is California) could account for a significant perceived increase in price.
(Even then, web reviews of today's petrol prices don't appear to approach what you're quoting, even on the West Coast, thought diesel is thereabouts).
Not doubting you (more than a little at least) but intrigued.

Same State, same city, same roads, same garages as what I saw in July/August last year.
