Sorry for your troubles, Rob.
I like the Mazda 6 as a proposition (have owned 2 if you recall, a 55 reg hatch and a 06 reg estate, both 2.0 petrol auto - economical they were not, but otherwise I really liked them), and if a saloon works for you then why not. I think their only real achilles heel (in petrol form) is rust, but that's a longer term consideration really.

I'd prefer to estate too I think. Although there has to be less legroom because the wheelbase is a bit shorter. I find it surprising they do not have the same length wheelbase.

That’s very surprising. I remember Renault making the 21 estate with a longer wheelbase than the saloon, but that makes more sense than a shorter one. Is the Mazda estate possibly based on a previous, shorter iteration of the 6, given that Mazda is a niche player in Europe but still wanted to keep an estate offering here?

The estate and saloon I think are the same platform and came out at the same time. They were made in Japan for the EU - and after 2012 they stopped making any Mazdas in the USA.
I only know the wheelbase is different because when choosing a company car in 2017 I had wheelbase as a criteria. The difference is 80mm.
My logic was the longer the wheelbase the more room in the rear. The Superb was the outright winner although I considered a Passat GTE. I had worked out my late father in law struggled to get into a car because of his Parkinson's and the size of the door opening. Having a wider door made it so much easier for him to swing his legs around to get out. Also not having to put feet under the seat in front made it easier.

If you’re retired now, get yourself something disgraceful, I think that’s probably important. 😉

I like that Mazda, but then I do hanker after a low stress car with a light colour interior. Car probably came off lease in March and they won't MoT it until it is sold. Could easily last ten years if you don't thrash it.

Yes it was three years old in March so I thought end of lease. But the garage in Bolton said it had just come in. Later he said it could have come in from another RRG garage though. You'd have thought they'd have sent it to RRG Mazda in Stockport. Maybe it's only just been auctioned and sat in a field.
I'll probably look it up on Car Vertical too.

In response to if you've retired... well I've stopped working for now. I am a long way off from getting access to a pension and if I take some cash out when 55 it won't last long will it.

I was supposed to be retiring round about now, but it seems they can’t find or think of anyone desperate/daft enough to take on what I do. In fairness, they put that to me rather more flatteringly, and I’ve agreed to stay for a while longer, but I can guarantee I won’t be there this time next year. I’m going to buy a tent. 😉

Is it going to be one of those tents that puts itself up ? Dodgy wrist and all that...
Rob talking about buying a car and Humph mentioning buying something suitably outrageous has got me looking to scratch an itch again. Mrs BPG enjoys pottering around in her electric sitty up thing. I can do short journeys in it though I really dislike winter driving and cross winds in it. My Focus can be bought or go back in August and I've still got a V8 itch that needs to be scratched. Buy the Focus or deposit on a Mustang cabrio automatic or Mach 1 manual if I'm feeling a bit Bullit. Hmmmm 🤔

I went to value a large Victorian mill owners residence this week. House worth about £2+. The owner has built garages with a total capacity of 23 cars. They are not full, but there some tasty pieces including two Countachs (5000QVs), one Murceilago SV, one Diablo, a Testarossa, 1965 GT40 and a proper Shelby Cobra plus various mundane British 1950s/1960s classics.
Most of the cars are never (ever) driven. He has never driven the Countachs, but occasionally takes the Testarossa, Murcielago and Cobra out (maybe twice a year at most). He is also a workaholic so never has free time anyway. What a waste. I was slavering away thinking about what I could do or where I would go with these cars. At least he was asking me about my Lambo Museum experience!
