Isn’t the Grandad a Vauxhall?

tne's comment about caravans not being allowed in those free areas around France etc made me think twice. Although I think I'd be less likely to want to use such things on longer, more settled sojourns than a few weeks tearing around between points. Think I'm still in favour of the caravan model, but this is 10 years off so plenty of time to consider, plan and change tack.
....far from all of the dedicated motorcaravan spaces are free, though some are, and most are somewhat cheaper (many much so) than using caravan sites. The cost isn't a big issue for us, however, and we happily use sites where they meet requirements. It's just that the use of Aires, Stellplätze, etc. provides much more flexibility, choice, closeness to where we want to be and the rest. In addition, the atmosphere is usually very friendly, with like-minded people from all over Europe. If cost is an issue, however, we have managed 3 weeks around Germany at an average cost of less than €7 per night, and that included a hook-up all bar one night! We are quite selective in which ones we choose to stay on, however, and we have our favourites for en-route stops. Generally we look for quiet, scenic, close to town/village facilities, good walking or cycling (though not necessarily all together, though often they are). Certainly caravanning and motorcaravanning lend themselves to a different mode of holidaying (though they can be interchangeable, you would ideally choose the one that suits your desired mode). I wouldn't change - we have other holidays in between the motorhome ones, but always enjoy getting back to touring.

...and that included a hook-up all bar one night! So that caravanner legend turns out to be true. 🙈

"I've got a Maltese Grandad...." What a wonderful name for a caravan - I thought for a moment that's what you meant. A huge one, towed by a very old battered Granada and driven as the Maltese used to (I'm going back many years and they're probably much better now) in the middle of the road with one hand on the horn. Pretty much the same last time I was there. Preferable to the Belgians though. Like Italy, it's predictable madness.

...except that in Malta, if you take more than minimal evasive action, you fall in the sea.
