Yes. Guns are another thing: we, for the most part, don’t have them and are much the better for it.

Earthquakes are the thing. I hate earthquakes and I cannot get used to them. Awful things.

Experienced them in San Fransisco and Manchester. Both very bizarre and disconcerting even though they weren't strong.

It is probably the construction of may houses in California to withstand frequent earthquakes in California that has meant town have been destroyed and fire spread so easily. You build them of timber to move with the shocks... so easy to burn.

The total destruction was awful. But the bizarre thing was how the fire seemed to burn one house and then ignore the tree next to it, or the house next door.
Friends in northern Israel suffered a major forest fire 18 months ago. Their house destroyed; the houses either side untouched. Houses behind destroyed; houses on the next street, 50m away untouched.
Their son was at home. Had the presence of mind to pick up passports, wallets and the back up drives with all their memories stored. Drove off to safety. Everything else destroyed, either by fire, smoke or water.

The bigger risk here in NZ is the tsunami threat that follows a large quake offshore or overseas. We seem to get a full-blown evacuation alert every couple of years.
It pays to keep a reasonable amount of fuel in the tank for any emergency getaways. A large 4wd is most useful in case of the need to cross rough terrain or damaged roads, and also to be able to cram in as many passengers and chattels as necessary!

I'd want something that could jump over a queue of campervans. 😉
(I may regret not ordering the snow-chains 🌨️😬)
