A photo-enthusiast friend encouraged me to try Instagram, so I did. And I don’t get it at all. A couple of things in particular. - I’m used to Facebook mangling the quality and resolution of pictures I post there. No big deal, but it was a shock to see Instagram doing it more.
- I quite like square format pictures, and use the option a lot with my phone camera, but if I want my 3:2 pictures cropped to a square, I’ll do it myself. Doesn’t happen every time but I’ve not worked out how to control when it does.
- The really weird bit: my followers. A few friends have spotted me and hooked up. Fair enough. But people - if they even are people - I know nothing about are following me and even Liking my pictures. I posted one yesterday with a dog in it, so I wonder if machines are scanning images for particular subjects and offering bait for nefarious purposes.
This is a screenshot of part of my followers list. I don’t know any of these people. How likely is it they just like my pictures? And this is the dog picture they seemed to like. The square crop is mine this time.

Don't worry about the followers, it's like Twitter, which I've been on for years and have accumulated over 200 followers, most of whom I don't know and many of whom probably don't exist. I haven't been murderated yet.

....I have a confession to make. My real name is Maria Rakhmanova (though I only use it at weekends, now), and I am stalking you. ...don't know why, because the pictures are дерьмо.

I thought they were nzuri kabisa.
Instagram is not for us. It is for young people.
It is Twitter for pictures and intended to be used by young people on smart phones, invented at a point in time when smart phones had 2mp cameras.

My children have explained some of the weirdness as accounts that people are trying to stoke up with ‘followers’ before offering them for sale. This may explain why so many appear to consist of glossy selfies of young, female ‘fitness’ types. Or maybe that type just likes my pictures of bridges and stations.
Doesn’t explain this one, though: I put up a picture I took last year of a futuristic bus station on the south bank of the Thames, tagged #vauxhall. And got a ‘like’ from an account named Opel.Ascona.

I have been banned by my children from any form of social media other than Facebook (I don't even have an account but use Espadrille's) or Twitter (have never used it).
I thought Instagram was for sexually provocative pictures which disappeared after 15 seconds?

I thought Instagram was for sexually provocative pictures which disappeared after 15 seconds? Either one of us has been doing Instagram all wrong or you’re thinking of Snapchat. 🤓 Instagram is odd. Everything I read about it mentions its potential to induce anxiety in young people at the thought their peers might be leading glossier, better lives than theirs. But it’s used by genuine photographers too — significantly better ones than me. Even though the pictures are tiny and the image quality awful, getting noticed on Instagram is considered pretty well essential as a preliminary to making a living out of photography.

Ah yes, Snapchat. That's the one I get worried about with my daughter...
Who'd be a parent today?

My girls love it. It is picture based sharing. For mine that includes their art work, various memes, and pictures [snaps and deliberate photography] they have taken. They share it with their immediate network, but then it is available to anybody on Instagram depending on blocking and privacy settings.
For them it is a picture based social network, though it does also have instant messaging. They perceive it as less cumbersome, less controlled and less work than Facebook. It appears to be very transient though, they don't seem to look back over stuff.
Like all tools; when it's used well it's good, when not then it's not.

Both my daughters separately informed me some time ago that they think Snapchat is dodgy, is used for dodgy stuff, and neither of them go near it. Which is fortunate, because if they wanted to use it then I would worry about it.
How old is your daughter?

14.
I think Snapchat is more used by my 20yo son and thinking more about it, my daughter does use Instagram for conversations. Must check this out more thoroughly...
