Anyway...... Yes Espadrille will be looking at 'nice' cars, but clearly smaller and cheaper than an Evoque. Just got to find something that suits my pocket and her self-determined image; so that will be easy then.

Well, why not start by trying establish what general type she wants, as in SUV, hatchback, estate, saloon, convertible etc. ? Then figure out which brands are "acceptable". Then you could...
Yeah ok, not going to happen is it? Far too logical...

Yeah - at the moment we are considering Mini (inc cabrio), DS3 cabrio, e-Golf, i3. Lord knows what else.
I suggested a nice Hyundai Tuscon (top of the range and good value) but no.
The thing is, our lives will change significantly in less than a year when we only have our daughter at home; the two boys having left. So large car not required, five seats not required, small dog means that a large car is not required, so she could get away with a small convertible.

I think I saw a 1 series convertible recently. Wasn't all that small in fact. Bet that'd be fun.

Current version is a 2. The coupé is a cracker. If you want to pay more for a slower, compromised car, I expect the convertible is all right too. 😒

I had one for 6 months before it was stolen. And it was a mark 4 so nowhere near as good at the mark 5, 6, 7 and 7.5.

It is fun. Mine's the 125i (10-registered) so not as fast as the 135i turbo, but I didn't want to risk a seven-year-old turbo anything. Fun enough just to take out for the hell of it and enjoy its handling, and the torque and sound, of that great straight-six. It's a sort of spiritual successor to the Triumph Vitesse (at least the Mark 2 Vitesse where it at last occurred to Triumph to beef up the Herald suspension).
I also agree, everyone should have a GTI at least once in their life. I nearly did three times, but each time, needing the extra room, went for an Octavia vRS estate, the next best thing. I still miss the Octavias, espacially the last one, a petrol manual.

And I've now had three GTI near-misses. I tried a Mk4 but decided I needed more space and chose the S60 instead. I tried and liked the Mk7 in 2015 but bought the 325. And I would probably have signed up for a GTE (I know, but it looks similar) if VW's sales people had been more on the ball.
Even the maligned Mk4 - provided it was the 150hp red-badged version - was a very likeable car. The Mk7 is very good indeed.

Some of the mega-snob Mums at my children's school are driving Hyundai Tucsons now. One swapped a Volvo XC90 for one.

That's what I had for 6 months. But it initially came with a silver I in the GTI badge because they didn't have any at the factory. Dealer fixed it a few months later. I wonder if it would have been stolen if I'd not had the I swapped for a red one?
