I quite like the fact my Superb is sending fuel usage data etc. to central servers and I can see this info in a web page or in the Skoda Connect app. My Focus does this through the old tried and trusted, belt and braces method. Watch the share price of the oil companies have a little tick every three to four days. 21.1mpg for the last tank. Can't wait until it's run in and the fuel consumption jumps like some people claim. I really doubt I will ever see an mpg figure that starts with a 3 unless it's 3.n mpg. The G31 has climbed to the heady level of, and peaked at, 28.4MPG. I think that is about the best it will get as the average speed for the last 2k miles is now at 40mph*, revealing a lot of motorway and fast A road miles. 28mpg is also the most common mentioned number reported by most B58 powered wagons, irrespective of model or size. That'll do me. *40mph is almost an unheard of mythical average in the southeast of england.

Maybe at home. We came back last night (an hour later than planned, and by taxi, thanks to whatever went wrong at Paddington) to Maidenhead station car park. We walked past a row of frosted-over cars until we got to ours, which was frosty on the roof but perfectly clear on the glass - and warm inside. Can your garage do that?😉 No, my garage doesn't allow the car to get frosted over 😁 At work, I have a quick clear windscreen, much more effective than chipping away with a visa card and very quick. Combined with the heated door mirrors, heated rear window, heated seats and heated steering wheel there really isn't much to do. I suppose I could have specified the preheater if I wanted to go everywhere in the winter in my T-shirt.

Anything worse than 40mpg would give me the shudders nowadays, and in truth nearer 50mpg seems more like it really.
But then, I am a tight arsed old Hector I suppose.

Always found the old cars were best for this - the Maxi with joined engine and gearbox was blowing warm air by the end of the street (I don't think it was exhaust fumes).
Some modern diesels can be a pile of cack at warming up until you've done a number of miles.

I don't think I could tell you the consumption of any vehicle I've had in the last 20 years. It just isn't enough to outweigh the pleasure of having something I want.
Not that any vehicle of mine has to cope with the mileage that you do, of course, which quite changes the picture I'm sure. But without your mileage, I just don't think it matters that much, does it?
Which is just as well I suppose, because whilst I don't know what the PPoS does to the gallon, I bet I wouldn't like it if I looked.

My S60 was. The E220 had some sort of auxiliary heater that warmed the car remarkably quickly once on the move. Stationary on the drive, though, it seemed to do nothing. Luckily our roads are straight and quiet in the mornings, so setting off with restricted visibility knowing that 400m would be enough to clear the glass isn't (quite) as risky as it sounds.

Well, funnily enough, I had the chance to test the theory the other morning. All three cars needed to be defrosted to leave at the same time, so of course muggins was the one pratting about outside in minus brass monkeys weather getting them all cleared of snow and ice, at half past very little in the morning.
Started all three engines and set the heaters to high etc. The first one to clear itself of frost was the diesel with the two petrols a good 5 minutes behind. Which doesn't make a lot of sense does it unless it has some witchy thing in its systems to help it to do that.

ISTR that my (diesel) Mondeo had (electric) PTC auxiliary heater assistance to the cabin heating that would operate at low temperatures to decrease the warm-up times.

Must be something like that I guess.

Your estate car being Cherman rolled up it's automotive sleeves and said something along the lines of : Kum on, wie haf werk to doo. Wie must komplet ze task quickly und efficiently. While your two petrol cars with a little Gallic blood in their make up shrugged their shoulders, lit a collective Gitane, leaned against the garden fence watching the German break out the tech and waited for the sun to do its thing. That's how it played out in my head anyway. Maybe I need to go and see someone about that.

28.4 MPG sounds pretty good for that engine. Nothing stuck under the floormat is there?

Fear not, Jezza will fix all that. Your swanky pipe-organ school will become a comprehensive, and universities will be free to all, regardless of income or ability. Incidentally, is there a worse, or less musical, instrument than the church organ? Yes, it can make an impressive amount of noise - see Also Sprach Zarathustra - but it is impossible to play with any semblance of rhythm or timing, without which it is not music Even a vuvuzela can do rhythm, for heaven's sake! I'd rather go to a bagpipes concert than an organ recital - though I'd probably choose a morning at the dentist over either. What's this ? 40+ years old...
