It’s hard to see road pricing not becoming the norm (not you, dixinormus ) as fuel tax revenue declines. We can’t simply transfer the tax to electricity, as that would penalise people who just need to keep their lights on. So it’s on the vehicles or on the use of them. Can smart meters tell which devices are drawing current, and how much of it? If so, it wouldn't be too hard to add duty for the part of your bill dedicated to car charging, perhaps?

Sounds like an invitation to Wayne the dodgy sparky to start a whole new business venture... 😉

I went through my old energy bills as part of planning the house works. There’s a very clear step up (about 1400 kWh a year) in our electricity consumption from late 2017 — and we don’t have a smart meter. But once it becomes the norm it’ll be harder to set a baseline like that.

Pay per mile will impact the cost of goods in shops /supermarkets if diesel is banned from cities. Imagine the cost of shuttling in all merchandise from distribution centres by 3.5 tonne electric vans that were once delivered by 44 tonne trucks. Each of them on pay per mile. Imagine no diesel vehicles of any kind inside the M25, no ships upstream of the QE2 bridge (maybe that's already the case I don't know). Pretty sure ships will somehow be exempt, in the same manner that airlines have never paid VAT on jet fuel. And isn’t retailing dying, as online shopping ramps up? Who wants to drive in to a city, pay to park, then mix with the great unwashed in a Main Street or a mall? Moreover, who wants to pay the retailer’s hefty mark-up on an item which can be purchased online more cheaply? We’ve bought things online and had them shipped from Europe which are still 50% cheaper than supporting local retailers!

White goods yes, you can get them anywhere. Fresh produce I'm old fashioned I like to see what I'm getting, similarly with clothes and shoes.
Edit: having said that, the last two cars I've had I didn't test drive. Just ordered and took delivery so, maybe I can change.

Toyota now sell online with fixed prices here in NZ. Dealers’ sites are for servicing and for test drives. No salespeople. The dealer will buy your trade in (and punt it on) leaving you to have your new Toyota shipped directly to your door.

Got my first look at the numbers today. Despite the higher interest rate, the numbers look good, and the cash price of the car is a better starting point than I’d expected.
In summary, if I put in my residual amount, I pay £60 a month less than today. Or I keep the monthly the same and pay £3000 less upfront. This for a white i3S with a similar interior and gizmo complement to ours. Black wheels, though, which might be a tough sell to the Committee.
First, of course, we need to see whether we like driving the car.

White with black wheels would be ok in Cheshire... 😉

Wouldn’t get that far though. No range extender, y’see. (Small mercies and all that. 😛)

Ask the dealer to swap the wheels with some proper ones if you want the car. Some other mug will be delighted with the awful things.

Erm, no. Altogether too Terry-Tryhard for me. But Vić’s suggestion seems a good one; there are enough Terrys out there.

Might that not negate the performance advantage of the i3S? (Wouldn’t help the ground clearance either.) 🤔
