That was how we got the one we have; i3s in stock were a rare exception then, but there were a dozen or so pre-facelift cars before the 2018 models arrived and we bought one of those. I don’t think it saved us any money directly — but it did save us a wait of months for a factory build, thus ensuring that we qualified for the incentive payment on the sooty old Mercedes diesel we traded in.

Your point about reduced new car volumes may be pertinent here, Norm. I’m a PCP novice, so for all I know a call at this stage is routine. But it may also be that trade is slack and they’re casting around for possibilities. S’pose I’ll find out tomorrow. At worst, it might be an opportunity to try out an i3s and see if the supposedly improved road manners make enough of a difference. I was reading someone's impressions of the i3S on another website just yesterday. He found it harsher riding and less sharp on the run-in (whatever that measn) thanks to the fatter tyres. Seems it's only an imporivemtn if you're after a sporty feel rather than a wafty feel. I prefer the latter, so I'd be circumspect about the S. Not htat I'll be buying one of either sort I shouldn't imagine. I'd be interestedt o hear your thoughts though if you drive one. In a PCP, yes, a call at this stage to get you to change early is pretty standrad. Nissan did it to me, offering me a newer car at a "never to be beaten" £200 a month. I waited a bit longer, until the PCP ended, and snagged an upgrade for £150 a month, same as I was paying for the inferior older vehicle.

The i3 is quiet but not wafty. It is firmly sprung to counteract tall-body wobble, and that with the slim tyres can make it a little jittery at motorway speed. (I also really dislike driving ours off the A308 roundabout between Maidenhead and Bray on to the motorway spur towards the M4 — I’m sure you know it — where it leans alarmingly but has yet to fall over.) The i3S sits a little lower on slightly wider wheels, which is supposed to help with that, and that’s what I’ll be looking for.

Yeah, familiar with that roundabout. If I were you I'd be tempted to give one a try, even if not hugely inclined to change at the moment. Just to bank the knowledge for future reference.

Tangentially, it occurred to me the other day, that my son may well be able to fascinate/horrify his grandchildren by telling them that he learned to drive in and owned a car that was powered by fossil fuel.

Yes I was saying the same to my kids last week. When our great grandchildren are about, they will look askance that we were allowed to pilot our own vehicles on the road...

If you are serious about changing cars WDB go and look at all the new stuff. The tech in EVs is moving so quickly to make replacing like with newer like a bit off an odd move for someone as analytical as you. Try a Tesla 3, Mach-E, Polestar 2 you probably know the list better than me.
Recent events (my wife suffered an LAD heart attack last month, survived, we are so unbelievably lucky) have made me realise sometimes the money doesn't matter and if you want something and you are not hurting anyone, go for it.

All the best to Mrs BPG, what a horrible experience that must be. Wishing her a good recovery, and nice to see you too yourself, BPG.

Fair point, and I did run up an iD3 config the other day, just for fun. But the i3 fits our use case really well, partly because it’s a size and shape that’s not quite like anything else. I put everything else I look at through a mental ‘Barbican Car Park 3 test’ in which I imagine threading it through the high-kerbed chicanes to the exit barrier. That’s easy in the i3 but I feel my buttocks clenching just imagining it in some of the others. I’ll certainly do the full market survey when the time comes to replace the CLS with an EV. Anyway, the call yesterday didn’t come. Salesman had a minor family emergency so we’re going to try again this afternoon.

The i3 is certainly still pretty unique in its styling, and the design has aged very well. And it’s had a few years under its belt to showcase its reliability.

i3S loan planned for Friday-Saturday. (Test drives aren’t permitted because of Covid, but apparently our car is due a complimentary visual health check, which may be thorough enough to run into a second day. And of course we’ll need a loan car to keep us mobile while it’s done.)
