Strap the petrol strimmer to the handle of the flymo so it makes petrol noises and smells a bit. ...if he practiced a few Brmmmmm Brmmmmms, he probably wouldn't need the strimmer.... ;-)

....and this morning, a result! Whilst the replacement will go on order for when we return, assistance from the current Mrs TnE in a four-handed job allowed me to heat the broken end of the (clock-type) recoil spring up enough to allow me to bend it without breaking it, and reshape the end such that it engages as required. (a four-handed job since the spring needs teasing out of the cassette to do the job, whilst simultaneously heating, bending and preventing it completely uncoiling). It's only lost a small amount of length, and might well now see the mower out, but for the replacement cost, I don't think I'll take the chance. Try that repair on one of the modern plastic jobbies? I think not... Had almost the same scenario when the mains cord wind back spring int he Bosch vacuum cleaner failed, same reason i guess, the bit where its turned over. I had to refashion the end whilst not burning the missus hands, or the plastic cartridge it was in.

the bit where its turned over.... ...nearly, but not quite. It is one of these: tinyurl.com/recoilspring...and it broke off where it leaves the outer circle. Needed to reshape it towards the centre (easy), and then turn the end over without it breaking ( not easy without heating it to "temper" it)

The simple test for the brake servo is to repeatedly press the brake pedal with the engine off to deplete the vaccuum. Then press the brake pedal, it should be rock hard, start the engine while pressing the pedal and it should depress as the vaccuum builds up. If the pedal is not rock hard and you do not see a leak you may have seals passing in the master cylinder.
