As I said in the Merc thread, I'm having a right song and dance changing the spark plugs on my Mazda 6. Simple job, right? Wrong.
I purchased some Bosch plugs from EuroCarParts using their reg number look up, and I got sent plugs with a 17.5mm thread. When I took out the old ones, those were NGK ILTR5A-13G with a 25mm thread. So, either the ones supplied to me are the wrong thread length, or the ones previously installed (which must have replaced the original Mazda items at some stage, the car currently has 90k miles on it and I've had it since 65k) were the wrong thread length.
But there's another wrinkle: the NGK ILTR5A-13G are listed as a 17.5mm thread on the Opie Oils website (usually a supplier on the ball), but as 25mm thread on EuroCarParts/CarParts4Less. There's also an NGK ILTR6A-13G on Opie with a 25mm thread length. I suppose Opie have got it wrong? To find out, I called two separate Mazda dealers. They want £90 (!) for a set of 4 plugs, and neither of them could confirm for me which length they are as they don't keep them in stock and it would take a few days to order in. I also called ECP and Opie, neither of them could shed any light and referred me to the manufacturer. Hmm.
What's going on here? Nobody, not even a dealer, seems capable of giving me an answer.
This is driving me round the twist. The old one which came out broke (the ceramic/plastic/whatever top bit broke off), so I now have a car I can't use until I've worked out if I've got the right plugs or not.
I think I'm going to have to assume that the 25mm ones are correct and send back the Bosch ones I've got, as 25mm have been in the car for at least 30k miles without a causing a problem. but still. I'd like to KNOW I've got the right parts installed.
I know a few people on here have had Mazda 6s, any specific experience with spark plugs? I've posted on the Mazda 6 Forum, but it's about as lively in there as it is here........

Ah ha. Good detective work. Looks like the longer ones are correct and ECP, Opie and Mazda don't know their harris from their tweed. Why on Earth couldn't a Mazda dealer give me that information? If Mazda can furnish NGK with the details, why not a dealer? Bizarre. I shall be back to ECP with the Bosch plugs fifthwith (which is a bit faster than forthwith).

I'm assuming it was a Mazda 6 (2.0?) and if mid 05 on then the long-reach ones are the ones (and it managed to do a good few miles on them previously, so I suspect they're the correct ones ;-)) You could do a search for equivalents if you're looking for cheaper: www.sparkplug-crossreference.com/convert/NGK_PN/ILTR5A-13G (though I'm not warrantying this site!) Edited to add: A large number of online purchase sites offer the shorter reach plug throughout the model life. The Bosch website, however, shows a similar switch to long-reach in mid 2005, and the model they recommend (after that point) is HR 8 NPP 302 (which is a 25mm thread length).

My Mazda6 was a diesel and a company car. So I never went anywhere nearly oily bits and it obviously had no spark plugs.
Sounds like a right runaround and Mazda dealers should know this stuff - they service the cars surely.

Yes, it's a Mazda 6 2.0, May 2006 registration (seatbelt date stamps show March 06).
The long reach it is. Thanks.

Ordered a 4 pack of the Bosch HR 8 NPP 302 from a motor factors in Swansea on ebay, £22 for 4. Result. ECP only do the NGK ones at £15 EACH, they're even £11/12 on CP4L. So you've saved me a couple of quid, TNE. Paid 28 quid for the wrong ones in the first place. Cheers, I owe you a pint.

Cheers, I owe you a pint. ...well, the earlier link on "equivalents" I posted shows these as being "the same" as the NGKs you're removing, and the Bosch link here is what I used for their recommendation: www.bosch-automotive-catalog.com/en/internet/ECAT-RS/vehicle-info/-/vehicle/equip/MAZ/871/5o78s067mkolhuu1dak2hq9egermu9c9....so, I think you should be OK. (Note, this is like the NGK site, with a switch in mid-2005, albeit a couple of months different) As for the pint, don't stretch yourself too much, Al, I reckon the difference might just cover the price of a packet of crisps in Reading See you in the Pack Horse...... (though I suspect they don't do Gale's any more)

Prefer the Pack Saddle these days, Loddon beers and fantastic food.

The only other pub that has ever taken the extreme step of unavailing themselves of my company is the (now extinct) Flying Horse, in central Nottingham. (......and, given the nature of the place, being removed/barred from there was some achievement, I can tell you!)

I was barred from an entire, albeit small, Greek Island about 30 years ago. Never attempted to test whether it still applies.
I did feel it was rather po faced of them not to enter into the holiday spirit of the incident. All I did was, and in mitigation, as a result of losing a small wager, was to ride a moped round the island...naked...with my equally underdressed friend sitting sidesaddle on the luggage rack, attempting to play his guitar, and in my further defence I wasn't entirely that naked either, I was still wearing a diving mask, snorkel and flip flops. I was "invited" by the one police officer on the island to catch the next ferry and not to return.
Ouzo in daylight can be a risky pastime. 😬

I've only ever been barred from the go karts at Thorpe Park, for driving too dangerously. I was 12 at the time.
Barman: Had one of those Bond villains in here the other day.
Customer: Javier Bardem?
Barman: Nah, no need mate, he was as good as gold.
