I had an MG Maestro for about 6 months. White one with red seat belts. Went ok, just didn't like looking at it. Bit like a girl I once knew... And it talked too much too...

Mum had an MG Maestro at the time I was a student. Racing green, don't remember the colour of the seatbelts. Same time as I had a white MG Metro, now I do remember the scarlet seat belts in that. The Maestro was easily the most powerful car I'd ever driven at the time, and yet it failed to impress somehow. It was a fine all round car, and I got to drive it quite a bit, yet I never truly loved it. I preferred the Escort 1.6 Ghia (MkIII) which I'd learnt to drive in. Similar feelings about a BMW 318iS which Mum replaced the Maestro with. Just meh. Nothing special. Gimme the Escort any time.
There must be something wrong with me. I preferred my FIAT Regata (which came before the MG Metro) to all those supposedly sporty cars too.

I had an MG Maestro as a hire car for a couple of days in 1989/90 and it felt very fast at the time, even without the extra 10% performance that hire cars always had. I had an Escort mk4 at the time and it was a car that always seemed to want to be driven quickly.

One of my very early cars was an Escort Mk1. It was only an 1100cc so it was slower than Nogbad's sloth, but I still liked it. It was non-metallic beige too, so it certainly wasn't sexy, but strangely enough it seemed OK at the time. Did me well enough for a year or so anyway. Handled better than anything else I'd previously had at the time.

My first car was a white Mk1 Escort 1100 Deluxe. A nail, but I loved it. Last time I looked, the reg number was still showing as alive. Which staggered me as it was such a wreck when I had it. I can't believe it didn't get scrapped.

Collectors cars now I believe. Many of them done up to look a bit like Mexicos. I really wanted a Mexico. Would probably have killed myself in one if I had though.

Never drove an RWD Escort, although one of the driving instructors I auditioned c1987 had one.
My 1989 mk3 1.3 was great. Only 63hp, but only 830kg too, so it didn't feel slow. Kept it for four years and should have kept it another two - when a company car came along - instead of being expensively tempted by an Astra with fuel injection and toys.

How I never smashed the dashboard into tiny little pieces on a Monday morning, I do not know.

I had an MG Montego EFi. It was the talking one. It hated me. ...been away and just catching up! (TBH, I did do a bit of browsing at the Thursday night curry club at the 'spoons in Todmorden, on the way back to civilisation from a day out in Burnley, but couldn't be *rsed to post on my 'phone - who says us retirees don't know how to live life to the full? ) I also had an MG Montego (senza turbo, senza voce). It was bought on change of job when my commute changed from a gentle 10 minute walk to a considerably less-gentle 30 mile each way drive. It was a remarkably good car until a 4-axle coal lorry pulled across the road in front of me whilst I was doing 60. With absolutely nowhere to go, the collision was quite violent. It was never quite right after a front-end rebuild, but I do remember it with affection. (in fact, one of my colleagues was so impressed with the drive, he order the similar, different trim, Vanden Plas version as his first company car!) The Mk1 Escort is also mentioned. My second ever car was a 1300 "sport" model, much like a stripped-out 1300GT with a mildly uprated engine and flared wheel arches. In bright red it was quite an attractive car, despite the lack of HP by current standards, it went ever so well, and I enjoyed it enormously. Remembered for its foot-operated dipswitch, and the fact that it got back-ended at the lights that some of you will know at the end of Church Road in Caversham. It wasn't one of you lot, was it?

The MG Montego *should* have been a good car, but...
The voice was insanely irritating. It had a digital speedo which I just found the most distracting thing ever. It was really difficult to get all teh power down, it just slid all over the place. It didn't go around corners well.
Pretty though, mine was white with grey and red lines and grey and red inside.
Not me in Church Road, though it could so easily have been.
