Given my car is a EU V diesel I'm likely to keep for another few years, it's worth nothing, is reliable and looks a candidate to be banned from city centres in the next few years, I think we have to keep an eye on hybrids. It's not every day we drive on black ice covered motorways and for the bulk of journeys it's good for fuel if not the most exciting prospect of a drive. At present 7 seater hybrids are limited to XC90, RRS and Prius+. I don't like the prospect of being another beta tester for Volvo, the VOC forum still has threads of bugs in the product, Range Rover has never been on the list and Prius+ is the latest development of what we already have in a different body. Hmmm, next car could be a stop gap while the manufacturers catch up with political thinking.

There seems to be a factory-pimped version of the Transporter. I see a couple around here, with chrome, big wheels, low-profile tyres and a ride height that would be questionable on a car, never mind a van. Can't imagine they're pleasant to ride in but there's clearly some statement being made - if only I were connected enough to understand it.

Hyundai i800 is the answer to this question.

SsangYong Turismo might also be an answer. Phenomenal value.

Oh get off, its so stupendously ugly (makes the Rhodius look pretty) that you'll be spending a fortune on eye surgery and PTSD counselling every time you open the front door. Weighs a ton and drinks fuel by the bathload, dynamically it makes the Ford van seem like an attractive proposition.

Ah, but Mercedes mechanicals NB. Tanks, I bet they last forever. I wouldn't need anything that big, but a Tivoli XLV would be a nice little runabout.

That may well be the case, but we're talking MPVs and Transits here. I can't really care too much about external aesthetics when the entire segment is ugly by definition. I'd wager a Turismo is a far nicer thing to drive/be driven in than a Transit of any kind. Have a look on autotrader at some internal pictures if you don't believe me. £19k for a brand new one, Merc engine and gearbox. 36mpg average for something the size of the Isle of Wight. What's not to like.
Kia MPV Wossit thing too. Sedona, that's the one. Who cares what badge an MPV has got on it, it's already an MPV, you can't do cool and shekshy in one of them.

Well lets hope it hasnt got Merc air springs. One of those leaning over, all you need is the band playing on the roof and its a remake of Titanic.

Another thought for the OP - Merc R Class?

No, but we used up our gearbox funnies on your previous car, and we're saving the turbo jokes for later. One must pace oneself.

Thanks for the suggestions. If we are to go back to diesel then it would have to be the new Euro 6 with Adblue giving us one car we could take into city centres of required. I suspect the Mercedes tech being employed in the above is state of the ark in automotive terms.
It might be worth me looking back three or four years, maybe something coming off lease as opposed to a private purchase. The tax is based on an acceptable CO2 figure at the time of registration and not bands which can be altered retrospectively.

Yes, in NRW. I saw some of the new fiesta tonight on my way home. Lots of people crowded around a navy blue version. It looks about the same size as a Mk1 Focus and very bright headlights.

Well I didn't see that coming...
Went with the holder of the household purse strings this morning to look at what will replace the planet saving echo warrior hybrid at the end of the year. 'She' has decided we need a cabriolet, 5.0 V8 automatic is looking good. You've got to own at least one V8 in your life. Who am I to argue?
