Nice, very nice actually, but, nigh on twenty grand for a second hand Kia? Hmmmm, not sure I'd want the fairly inevitable depreciation hit you'd take on that after a year or three. Might be wrong of course, maybe they hold their value better than I'd imagine.
Edit - your edit beat me to my post. But your second option looks like a better buy to me. Not necessarily in terms of usefulness or whatever, but certainly in terms of holding its value.

Jinx.
Actually looking back at my edit, it's 2 years newer and 40k miles lighter. Hmm. I think the domestic powers that be are hooked on Merc blingcrack now, though.
Autocar says slightly better depreciation on an Optima than a St. Mondeo, and you're not averse to those. And 6 years left of the 7 years warranty might actually make it a better buy than a 3 year old Merc with no warranty in some people's eyes. Mine maybe.
Hmm.

I have a Scottish friend who has a Russian wife, and he is not allowed to have anything other than a large Mercedes or a Range Rover. It's just not negotiable apparently. 😉

Ah, my variant is "Russian Lite" (a bit like I'm 'Scottish Lite' I suppose, or 'nobbut a f*cking plastic Jock' as I was delightfully called once by a diplomatic representative from Govan), being from a smaller Orthodox country in the nether regions of Europe. Which reminds me. Christmas dinner tomorrow. Roast turkey with kiseli kupus (sauerkraut).

I just priced it up, new - with those options its a £29k vehicle. So its lost 30% in 3k miles and less than a year.

Damn, I want that E now. Ticks all my boxes and is well priced, especially if I could talk a grand off it or get an extended warranty (like the one I have from BMW) included. Don't need it - don't use the one we have enough to warrant a change, and Mrs B1 would hate the column gear selector - but it looks great. Less in real terms than I paid for ours when it was 3 years old.

If you buy anything nearly new, you'll still have to put up with some depreciation, but not the first bit of it, whatever model you choose. How much has that E Class lost? Quite a bit as well, I expect, although of course at a slower rate. Pays yer money, takes yer choice (RIP Rick).

Might well fix the biggies on mine and drive it in to the ground over the next 5 years or so rather than change again sooner. Dunno.

The E would have been £35-38k new, depending on options. Half that for a three-year-old that will still out-new many new cars makes a lot of sense.
And it's an S212. Ws are saloons.

Yeah, always get that one arse backwards. I assumed it was W = Wagon, S = Saloon and I can't quite shift it from my brain.

You know you should...even though it's the model without a sunroof, or sports suspension...be fine, I suppose, as a compromise...😉 I'm not keen on the column change either, but you do get used to it. I tried to reverse the Qashqai the other day by putting the wipers on...

Meh or not, and I do get that by the way, the newer ones are much less thirsty, mainly from what I can gather talking to WDB about it in particular. But maybe he drives like a witch on fire. Dunno.

Yeah, funny when it's that way round; less so when you go to wipe the screen and reverse into the wall.
No sunroof, eh? Even better. And I've got one car with sports suspension. That's probably enough.
I save the witch-on-fire behaviour for the 325 these days. (It's a bit undignified in a thing as big as an E.) In spite of that it still gives me 42mpg. Even with the super-smooth chauffeur treatment the E seldom betters 37.

There you go then, it would make even more sense to get a newer one. Not often that nice navy blue colour comes up either...😈

Caravansite Blue, as it isn't quite called.
Actually, they reminds me of a point against it: it won't have a towbar, and fitting one will cost another £600 or more. (Not for a caravan, of course - awful thought - but necessary for the bikes.)
