Oh spare us the 'January detox' bollocks! It's my birthday this week and do you think I'll find anyone (over the age of 15 anyway) who will accept even a slice of cake, never mind a glass of wine? No, they're all 'trying to be good', or 'making up for December'. Gits!*

I don't carry about detoxing, I live in a permanent state of tox. My drinking habit is utterly appalling and ensures I am well toxed.
But the gut bothers me a bit since I don't usually have one, but its crept up on me over the last few months. I put a suit on the other day that I hadn't worn since last summer. Rather depressing.

Ditch the carbs for six days each week and reduce alcohol intake by 80%. Will take about three months to get back to your pre-summer weight and svelteness.

I am rubbish at cutting down or reducing.I had the same thing with cigarettes. I cannot tell you how many times I cut down over the years, always to ultimately fail. I'm a bit binary, I do it or I don't and so worry about my own addictive tendencies. Ultimately the reason I have never got into drugs or gambling, unlike my sister.
So the alcohol has to be no alcohol. The truth is that doesn't really bother me at the moment because I'd fallen into a gradual trap of drinking excessively and so it was starting to bother me anyway. We'll see how it goes. As much as anything I want to stop just to prove to myself that I can without issue.
Food's therefore a bit more difficult. The food here is pretty much ALL fattening. But that's just a matter of habit so I'm not worried.
What I really need to do is more upper body exercise. After a lifetime of surfing, windsurfing, snowboarding and paragliding I've done little or nothing this last year. Which, considering I live an hour from the beach and an hour from the Andes is a bit snivelling and pathetic. Bit of a lifestyle reversal required.

Building muscle - within healthy limits, of course - is always a good goal. Muscle consumes energy even when it's idle, so more muscle means you'll turn less of your food into fat. Just remember that your biggest muscles are in your legs and arse, so pay some attention to that area too.
The problem with Esp's plan, and others like it, is that it's a diet. It may produce rapid results but it's unlikely to become a sustainable habit, and the danger is that the old habits return with a vengeance and you're back to where you started.

HNY. Yep, back at work. Again. Although daughter's birthday and children not back at school until Thursday so WFH.
Drink? Meh. I had some over the holidays but far, far less than usual. Going off it a bit really, just can't take even the mildest hangover any more. Two glasses of red on NYE, that was it. The 21 yr old me would be soiling his trousers in hysterics.
Diet? Meh. I suppose I'm about 2 stone over that which I should be at a guess, not that I ever weigh myself. Would probably be best advised to lose 4 inches off the waist. But you know what? I don't think it's going to kill me significantly earlier than when I would expect to be keeling over anyway. Next burst of exercise: skiing in Slovenia over half term.

Partly true. I started this diet in January 2015 and lost about 10-12kg. My regime is raw vegetables and two boiled eggs for breakfast, salad with some fish or meat based protein for lunch and a large meal in the evening without carbs. However the weekend is a free for all, so I am not really tempted to stray during the week. However the holidays are hard, so I am back on the regime proper, as opposed to recent months when I have been a little lax.
The main difference has been a less puffy face, a reduced waist by 2" and I can now wear ties with my shirts.
Exercise helps a bit, but it has to be sustained and regular exercise of some intensity to match the effects of simply reducing calorie intake.

Can't give up carbs. They're the only source of fibre, without which, well, you know. Life becomes a bit of a bind.

Its British shops.. Vegetables here taste of very little, especially tomatoes. My wife makes a lasagne and the taste is adequate. Using the same recipe in Israel using local produce, the taste is vastly superior. Knobbly fruit and veg may look ugly but they sure taste better.

Terroir, guvnor. Our (UK sold) veg is mostly grown in sponges under artificial light in Holland or Spain. I find the same with market produce in Belgrade, organic without being labelled as such (they can't afford sprays and pesticides and all that), ugly and very tasty.
I find Lidl's loose vine tomatoes the tastiest supermarket toms here, they're the only ones which smell of my granddad's greenhouse.
