Our dog is 13 and still in good shape, it’s a double edged sword thing though as you say, he forces us to get out and about every day, even if the weather gets a bit grim, but it is also a restriction on spontaneous travel. We’d miss him a lot though, he’s just there in our lives.

At the vets now doing an X-ray. Initial thoughts are a ruptured ACL after jumping off a couch. For those of you with a football head on - this is serious - 'out for the rest of the season'; and 'career ending injury' are thoughts that come to mind. Hopefully it can be resolved. He is small, only about 6kg but has walked up Scafell Pike, Snowdon, Cadyr Idris and across the Peak District, as well as daily walks some of which are several miles in length.
We have in the last couple of years asked the question of what we would do when the inevitable happens, especially when we are likely to be complete empty nesters in a few months time... A dog at home is a comfort but we are blessed by having a son who lives at home which helps with the daily dog care. Not sure we would manage easily with just the two of us and me trying to take more time away from the business.

All the best to the wee doggie. There's a three leggedy one which happily galumphs around our local park every day. Resilient things, dogs.
I do like having one around and would miss it desperately, I suppose I'll cross the bridge when I come to it on retirement, and decide based on the lie of the land at the time.

Confirmed ACL is ruptured. Options are painkillers and let it heal naturally but with likely misalignment, or surgery to set it properly.
Space for operation next week... Unless good reason not to do it, that is the road we are going down although the recovery will be tough for the first two weeks.
Hopefully the insurance will contribute the majority of the costs. Also discovered he has arthritis... It's no fun getting old

Oh, poor little chap. (Our cat weighs more than 6kg. I should tell him to be careful jumping off the fence.) Surgery sounds like the option that’ll give the best quality of life, so he’s a fortunate dog to have you as his humans.

He has been a wonderful addition to the family and endears himself to everyone who visits, even those who are scared of even the smallest dog. I worry that any other dog we may get will not be as enjoyable to own..

Ain't that the truth...
Well unless the afterlife is the paradise we are promised by various religious leaders! I am not commenting further on that point...

I have my own considered thoughts on that matter...
