I've been in jail in Reading, but not in gaol.
Mind you, I suspect that the accommodation and company in Reading Gaol was not much worse than that in the depths of Reading Police Station cells.

I have now been to the exhibition, went last Thursday with some Canadiadian cousins who are visiting the UK on a 40 day tour. I'm glad I did so in order to get a look and the feel of the place before it inevitably gets redeveloped. Can't say it was earth shatteringly good, but then I'm not a great fan of either Oscar Wilde nor art-farty stuff in general. It's nice, but it ain't Craven Cottage or a good real ale boozer with a 90's-indie filled jukebox or the Billy Joel concert at Wembley this weekend just gone (more of that elsewhere perhaps). Anyway, I'd still encourage anyone passing through town to have a look.
Also ongoing at the moment are excavations around the Abbey ruins which are trying to located the grave of King Henry I.
It's all happening in Reading, they even want to move my house from the East to the West (constituency). Exciting times.

Decided not to do this in the end, but went instead to the BR Southern Area Electrical control room, opened in 1936, closed in 1996 and preserved,, its a delight of art deco industrial design and 1930s technology.

There were 5*, only one left and its outside Woking Station, which itself, if you stripped off the crime that was the 1970s, is a gem of art deco design and construction, right down to the signal box, now disused but grade 1 listed.
* All rail power from Waterloo to Southampton is now controlled at Eastleigh.
I shall be making a video of the visit.

Well you've still got until the end of October to visit Reading Gaol, Zedderooney, if you're passing through. The Retreat is just around the corner, too. Check out that marrow. theretreatpub.co.uk/

Check out that marrow. theretreatpub.co.uk/Passing through, and Reading do not belong in the same lexicon. Reading traffic planners saw to that. It's bad sometimes, but I go from the northern boundary to the southern and back every day, in the rush hours, have been doing so for years, and it's usually perfectly all right. Traffic flows well outside peak times, as a retiree you've no need to be in the peak traffic. Perhaps if you're worried about the traffic you could visit on the train - keen on those, right? ;-)
Wouldn't let it put you off if you want to see the place/exhibition.
