Assuming ailing mother's will does not state "Battersea Dogs' Home"? I already know that my step-father's does, but what the dogs are going to do with an MGB and a Wolseley 15/50, I have no idea. Plenty of junk yard dogs were brought up and lived in such dwellings.

I have her 2004 Auto Clio on my drive I have just sorned and prepping for sale. A genuine 28k miles, be a nice car for someone at 1200 quid.

I need to refurb the cloudy headlamp lenses, stick some hubcaps on it, quick polish and its away. I quite like it, its nippy, sweet handling, nice riding, the sunroof rattles, but they all did that of that era. Its a testament to the french ability to build good small cars, if the buyer is wise enough to invest in a new cam belt its 6 years of perfect runaround car.

As auto is a pre req, any VAG product is out the window, mores the pity. Hmm. As someone who has had 2 consecutive dodgy TC autos, I'm not sure that DSG is a much bigger risk over a TC. If you want to worry about something, it's cambelts, surely. Autoboxes, like clutches and DMFs, seem to go wrong, whatever type. Nothing's bulletproof.

I only drive autos, where I have a choice. Who needs a keep fit gearbox these days?
I bought a V70 which had gearbox issues, but that turned out to be a £12 sensor, and the Ram's gearbox lost the plot after an impact. Other than that, I've never had a problem. Never had a cam belt let go either. [touch wood, touch wood, for God's sake I'm touching wood!]
Cars seem frequently owned by neurotic wimps.
I think you can go too far worrying about this stuff. Cars go wrong, sometimes a bit, sometimes a lot. It seems little to do with its contents and more to do with how its been looked after. But if it'll happen, it'll happen.
I'd have kept the Saab. On which note, by the way, the Royal British Legion got your tenner.

I'd have kept the Saab too. Mrs A was less convinced. She's today driving around in three-pointed leather equipped luxury and I've got the Mazda......had forgotten how much use the gearbox gets in a non-turbo petrol engine car with puny torque. Glad it's an auto box, which hasn't gone wrong.....yet.

Is it behaving itself after its holiday bout of automotive petulance?
I bumped into an old friend in Beaconsfield services last night at the noodle bar (no we weren't in the 'Spoons!) Anyway, he was showing me his latest car, it's a Peugeot 508 estate, second hand with 100,000 miles on it. 1.6 diesel with some kind of funny semi-auto gearbox. Had to bite my tongue...didn't want to rain on any parades...but would you, would you really buy a French car with a semi-auto box and 100,000 miles? Feel lucky ?

We tried to put you in a 508, didn't we, when you were looking for the Bitburger lifestyle on a Carling Black Label budget? Must admit, any semi-auto gearbox would put me of at 0,000 miles, never mind 100,000.

Well the same guy who has the 508 had a diesel auto Mondeo estate before which gave him no trouble, but he decided to replace it anyway and before the Mondeo he had a Passat DSG estate which he had to bin because the gearbox went and would have cost more than the car was worth to fix.
Didn't have the heart to tell him that he might have been better to keep the Ford or if he really wanted an update, to get similar younger one. He tends to buy ex-fleet stuff, two or three years old but with big miles from auction, keep them a couple of years, sells privately and so on.
He does a 240 mile round trip commute twice a week...
Maybe he'll be lucky.
